It is said that “success is simple, though it is not necessarily easy”

Search online and you will find no end of powerful quotations and articles on the qualities you need to be successful.

But with so much ‘success information” available, why do people still struggle?

Doing what we do at IncomeDiary we witness more than most some the obstacles and trip-ups that people experience.

We also witness a lot of SUCCESS and what works! And one thing in particular that our successful readers are always doing – is modelling success and noting what works – in fact for some it is close to an OBSESSION!

If you like please share, Blog, Facebook, Twitter etc….

21 Key Principles For Success In Modern Times

1) What You Focus On Is What You Get

Or put another way, Focus On What You Want, Not On What You Don’t.

If you focus on past failures or what is wrong with your life right now that is what you will create – more failure and regret!

But focus on something positive – having a successful business, achieving your goal – and that is what you will get!

And the number 1 enemy of business focus is: DISTRACTION

Just how much time per day do you waste on things not related to your purpose, your path? For most of us, it is far too much. In a world of Information Overload it is easy to get distracted with emails, pranks, viral videos, Facebook, Twitter etc.

Get yourself in the habit of asking – does this get me closer or further away from my goal? If it places you further away, stop doing it! In short, be clear with your purpose and focused on your dreams.

As Craig Ballantyne puts it…

Decrease the Daily Friction that steals your time: Do fewer chores. Cut your commute. Eliminate your obsessive time wasting habits. Plan your day. Script your schedule. Batch your work. Minimize your email. Go Device Free for 2 hours so you can think, and do a full day on weekends.

Open up more time for BIG thinking and taking action on what really matters in life.

And Winston Churchill put it perfectly…

“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks”

Do not let information overload and modern day distractions distract your FOCUS!

2) Raise your Adversity Quotient!

In other words, the better your ability to handle adversity and the suck factor, the more you will succeed.

Accept that difficulties and challenges will happen. New products take longer to create that you planned, new websites are not ready when planned. These things happen and it is your ability to handle that determines your success or failure in the long term.

(Thank you to Bedros Keuilian for this definition.)

Will Smith also has a very wise observation for us…

“Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, cause hate in your heart will consume you too”

Sometimes the bad things that happen in our lives put us directly on the path to the most wonderful things that will ever happen to us

3) The BIGGER the problem you solve – the bigger your reward

Or take an existing solution and turn it on its head like AirBnB and UBER have done!

Make sure the problem you solve is one that needs SOLVING and those who benefit, want it and will appreciate it (and pay for it).

But – don’t imagine a problem! Too many entrepreneurs invest time and money in creating a service or product there is no market for (or not a big enough market for). Do your market research and be very clear on who your customer is – and if that customer will pay for a solution like you are offering.

If you are a Blogger what will your blog offer that the many other blogs don’t. What makes you different?

4) Join a Mastermind

A Mastermind Group is for business owners who want to improve their business and who are willing to put the effort in. A Mastermind Group is not a Networking Group or A Coffee Club – it is for individuals who are serious about growing their business and who have the discipline to follow through.

I have already written extensively on Mastermind Groups in: 17 Reasons Why You Need To Join A Mastermind Group

5) Keep Close to Your Core Business

Now if you are the CEO and have even just a few employees, never mind 100’s or 1000’s it is easy to get isolated from the front line. One way to keep in touch is to periodically work in your service or support departments – even if it is only answering the phone for a couple of hours per month.

One of the few TV programs I enjoy is: Undercover Boss – It amazes me more and more bosses don’t go undercover. Always be asking questions of your employees, customers, suppliers – it is amazing what you will discover from the simple task of asking questions.

6) Practice Gratitude Daily

Gratitude is such a powerful and positive way to look at life – make it part of your daily rituals!

Recommendation: Set aside the same time daily to do practice Gratitude to make it a habit.

What are you for grateful right now? Meditating with your gratitude list and giving thanks for all the positives in your life will uplift you even more than a big belly laugh!

Practice living mindfully – and stop worrying about past mistakes and the future. Live in the NOW!

Practicing Gratitude is the best cure for worry.

Karl Pillemer, Ph.D., is the keeper of The Legacy Project at Cornell University. When Dr. Pillemer asked 1,200+ retired people what they regretted they often answered, “I wish I hadn’t spent so much of my life worrying.”

Worry create anxiety and stops us from enjoying life’s precious moments and as often been said, most of what we worry about never happens!

7) Good Enough is NOT Good Enough

“Take action every day, surround yourself with winners, never peak, and always pay it forward.”

– Bedros Keuilians Rules for Success, Freedom, and Market Dominance

8) Exercise Daily

Walk, Run, Swim, Play – Just Do IT!

“It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” – Babe Ruth, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer.

“Do. Or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda, Jedi Master.

success and progess

9) Your Best Ideas Come Outside The Office!

When faced with a major decision or problem, go for a walk, take a shower, do something different and let your creative process take over!

10) Give Back! Support A Cause

Businesses with a CAUSE are more successful than those without a Cause!

Making money and achieving financial freedom for one self is nice but the Human Condition requires more satisfaction that that.

My friend and mentor, Yanik Silver had transformed his business into a business with a cause. which he calls an Evolved Enterprise. And he’s calling on more entrepreneurs to do the same thing. In fact, Yanik predicts that if you don’t make this change, your business may not survive another 4-7 years.

Yanik talks about how business can be impactful TO THE WORLD along with making money. Evolved Enterprise is a highly recommended, must read book!

I have been fortunate to get to know Yanik Silver quite well – Evolved Enterprise has inspired myself and many others to re-evaluate how we do business. I have travelled with Yanik to places including, Iceland, South Africa, Mexico and Necker Island.

In Necker we were supporting Virgin Unite (The Virgin Charity) and were joined by Sir Richard Branson, Joe Polish, Matt Mullenweg (Founder of WordPress), Sean Stephenson and Vishen Lakhiani among others.

Perhaps the biggest Takeaway I got from my various meetings was that a CAUSE is something you should start with – not something you add later, when you are ‘successful’. What is Your Cause?

11) Success is a Trickster!

Success is a trickster – It makes a fool out of all of us – if you let it.

What I mean by that is, especially when you start to have some success, you can believe that you’re a lot more gifted than you really are. I’ve made this mistake.

In my 20s, I was extremely successful in sales. I had never experienced failure. I was a remarkable salesperson. All I’d ever had was Big Money Success. After a while, you actually believe your own publicity, and you believe that everything you do turns to gold. Unfortunately for me it was not a never ending success story and in 1989 I lost a business I had founded along with all my personal wealth at that time.

Perhaps the most dangerous thing in the world for an entrepreneur, is to NOT experience failure.

Bill Gates puts it extremely well when he says:

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose”

12) Unplug Once Per Week – Go Device / Digital Free!

It is good for the soul – and it also makes you more creative!

13) Do not engage in confrontations with anyone, in-person or online.

This is a waste of time and energy. If I have caused harm, I apologize and fix the situation. And then I take a deep breath, relax, breathe out, and re-focus my efforts back on my work and goals. (Craig Ballantyne)

14) I am independent of the Good Opinion of others!

“If you work to minimize criticism, you have surrendered the beauty and greatness of what you’ve set out to build.” – Seth Godin

15) Always be learning, seeking, finding..

16) Modest is Good!

Some of the most successful people I know are also the humblest.

17) You don’t have to reinvent the Wheel!

Sometimes success is as ‘simple’ as taking an existing idea or way of doing things and putting a new spin on it. Think of UBER and AirNnB again!

18) Ask High Quality Questions.

The questions you ask yourself determine how you feel. (Ask rubbish questions and you will feel rubbish) Ask quality, empowering questions and you will feel empowered.

What am I happy about right now? What is good about this situation?

Albert Einstein is quoted as saying:

“If I had 60 minutes to solve a problem and my life depended on it, I’d spend 55 minutes determining the right question to ask. Once I got the right question, I could easily answer it in 5 minutes.”

The quality of our answers is dependent upon the quality of our questions. The more accurate and more specific our questions are, the more profitable and more beneficial the answers we get will be.

And even more important – if you ask the wrong question you are almost guaranteed to get the wrong answer – so like Einstein, take the time to work out the correct question.

Of course equally important and one that many entrepreneurs struggle with – when faced with a situation or a question, don’t be afraid to say you don’t know. Too many people bluff their way through life simply because they are afraid to admit they don’t know!

19) Do I want to be right or do I want to be happy?

20) Flaky People Exist – Get Over it!

It’s only a matter of time before you meet someone who’s always late, cancels important meetings at the last minute, and never acts on their commitments. These people can be called ‘flakes.’ Almost everyone’s acted flaky at some time in their lives, but chronic flakiness can be seriously annoying and disruptive.

Personally I try to avoid having people like that in my life. What do you do?

21) Be prepared with solutions for the obstacles in your way.

In other words, have a Plan B! (Plan C and D to!) I see so many initially successful people lose their way and lose their fortune simply because they had not foreseen a change in the market or worse still had assumed that because they had experienced so much success that it would naturally continue. (Remember Success is a Trickster!)

The graph of success is not a straight up arrow – it is upward trend with occasional dips along the way. Be prepared for those occasional dips and recognize them for what they are – signposts that you need to change and adapt to market conditions. All great entrepreneurs have had their ups and downs – have a Plan B!

Scott Belsky the entrepreneur and author perhaps best known for co-creating the online portfolio platform, Behance, Inc released this graph on the JOY of being a entrepreneur – Joy is not a straight up arrow either!

the joy of being an entrepreneur

Be ready to control what you can, to conquer the chaos and cope with what you can’t control, and to concentrate on what really counts.

“If you want to change the world, first change your heart.”

– Confucius

Join a Mastermind Group For Your Future Success

I am quite different today compared to 20 or 30 years ago, or even 5 years ago. In a large part this is down to who I have associated with…

We are all a product of our environment and as I said before ‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.’ In my case I have been fortunate especially in recent years to spend time with some high quality individuals. My development as an entrepreneur and as a human being is down to the company I keep and the quality of mentors / teachers in my life.

Most of us have heard this or a variation of it ‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.’

Tony Robbins, Eben Pagan and Tim Ferris have all said it but I believe the originator was the late great Jim Rohn.

The quality of the people you surround yourself with will have a profound effect on your life, your thinking, your business.

=> What is Your Life Passion?

=> What is Your Purpose in Life?

Are the people you spend time with helping you achieve this?

It is a fact that your lifestyle will generally reflect the lifestyle of the people you have in your life.

What is a Mastermind Group?

Napoleon Hill is often credited with being the originator of Mastermind Groups, but the truth is Mastermind Groups have been around much longer.

Mr Hill had a very simple definition:

The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.

Ben Franklin is also famous for a Mastermind Group. In 1726, despite working from early morning to late at night in his print shop, Ben Franklin organized a meeting group called The Junto. This group met every Friday evening to debate questions of morals, politics, and natural philosophy, and to exchange knowledge of business affairs.

Two questions Franklin asked the group each week were:

“Who is thriving & why?”
and
“How might they be emulated?”

Wow! These are still brilliant questions today!

Look at what is working in another industry. Ask yourself why it is working. Then figure out how you might emulate this success in your own business. It might mean reformulating your products, adding new elements to your books and information products, or studying video sales letter transcripts to make your sales messages more compelling.

I have been a member of various Mastermind Groups – it has allowed me to make introductions and connections it would have just about been impossible to have done any other way. Many of those connections have gone on to become very dear friends and colleagues. Indeed it was through a Mastermind Group that we first met Craig Ballantyne – IncomeDiary contributor and author.

Yanik Silver Mastermind Group

Yanik Silver Mastermind Group 2009, inc Mike Dillard, Craig Ballantyne, Andrew Lock, Bernadette Doyle, Carrie Wilkerson, Ryan Deiss and Perry Belcher

Joining a Mastermind Group is also about giving back and helping others. When I first joined a Mastermind Group I was a little concerned that I would not have as much as some others to contribute to the group but it soon became clear I had skills and experience that others did not and vice versa. The common theme was that we where there to share and help each other and there is something quite amazing about witnessing a business problem solved by the group!

A Mastermind Group is for business owners who want to improve their business and who are willing to put the effort in. A Mastermind Group is not a Networking Group or A Coffee Club – it is for individuals who are serious about growing their business and who have the discipline to follow through.

Reasons To Join a Mastermind Group

1) You will create deep and lasting connections with some incredible people.
The life of an entrepreneur can be lonely – Sharing your dreams, aspirations and challenges with a group of like minded individuals makes it a lot less lonely! You will naturally raise your game as you spend more time in the company of these like minded entrepreneurs – plus of course the average of the five people you spend the most time with will change – for the BETTER!

2) To Challenge Yourself
A Mastermind Group will challenge you to grow your business to its fullest potential. In day to day business activity it is easy to get side tracked and way led – with a Mastermind Group you will keep on track.

3) Accountability
At the end of each meeting you will have an action plan, objectives you need to meet before the next meeting – which the Group will hold you to account for. It takes real discipline to succeed in any endeavour. Being held to account by your mastermind colleagues ensures you maintain the disciplined behavior necessary to succeed in your business.

4) Brainstorming.
Share your ideas and alternatives within your Mastermind Group. If you are not sure what to do next, what direction to go in, the collective power of the Mastermind will kick in and get you back on track!

5) Feedback
Receive feedback from successful individuals on how to solve business issues. Perhaps you have staff issues or financial challenges – let the Mastermind help you resolve them. Remember in the group we all have the same goal – to help each other grow their business. There is no hidden agenda – everyone is on the same side.

6) Support
Sometimes business is difficult and the challenges can seem overwhelming. Perhaps you have a difficult employee or a legal problem – chances are your Mastermind colleagues have experienced the same issue. You will never be short of alternative suggestions on how to overcome issues. Additionally you will develop deep and meaningful friendships over above all the business help.

7) Focus & clarity
Sometimes the day to day activities of running a business can distract us.The Group will keep you on track – just when you are losing focus, the group will remind you of your purpose and why you are in business.

8) Better Decision making
It is easy to put off a decision – but with a Mastermind Group you have your own due-diligence team to give you the confidence you need when making an important decision.

9) Increased Confidence
Better decision making means greater confidence – greater confidence spreads through your organization and inspires everyone to perform better. You will feel good. You will feel more confident.

10) Creativity
Looking for new ideas for your business? Have a new idea for your business? Want objective feedback and help with that idea? The group will provide more ideas and constructive feedback on your ideas.

11) Increased Profits
Many businesses leave money (profits) on the table – the purpose of the group is to help you take full advantage of all the opportunities that surround you and build your business into the huge success it deserves to be.

12) Discover new business partners and cross promotion.
Collaboration is the name of the game. You may find someone in the group that is a perfect fit to work on a project with you. Or, you may be the perfect person to help another member as well. The group works together collaboratively, to achieve more together.

13) Think bigger.
You can’t help but think bigger and stretch beyond your boundaries when surrounded by amazing people doing amazing things. Fellow Mastermind members will help you to see the potential you are missing out on.

14) Expand Your Skills.
Everyone in a mastermind group is unique in skill, experience and connections. Everyone is expert at something and as you interact with each other you will be picking up new skills and talents – all the time, working towards a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.

There is a special energy that surrounds a group of success minded individuals – an energy that lifts the individual and the group. In a Mastermind Group participants raise the bar by challenging each other to create and implement goals, brainstorm ideas, and support each other with total honesty, respect and compassion.

15) Helping Others.
It was Zig Ziglar who said: “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” You will get great satisfaction from helping other business owners in their businesses.

16) Hot Seats
The principle of a Hot Seat is that you get a chance to present to the group your biggest challenge or issue right now. For starters this helps you gain clarity on the issue you are facing and what you need help on. The Group in turn will provide you with a series of options and opportunities to follow up on and the person in the Hot Seat walks away with lots more ideas and solutions than they could generate on their own. In my experience, especially in bigger groups, not everyone will get an opportunity to Hot Seat every meeting – but even those not in the Hot Seat invariably walk away with new insights and ways of looking at things.

17) New Business Ideas
I have purposely not placed the reasons to join a Mastermind Group in any particular order – but on a personal level I would have to credit the generation of New Business Ideas as one of the biggest benefits of joining a Mastermind Group. These are ideas over and above anything I may have come across when brainstorming – these are completely new ideas, not even related to my existing business. Just being in the same room as all this superior business brain power has led to some of my best new business ideas.

“If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.”

– George Bernard Shaw

Business Integrity and Sharing sensitive info in Mastermind Groups

Successful Mastermind Groups are built on trust, integrity and sharing. Naturally the format of Mastermind Groups means that you and your fellow members will be sharing sensitive information. It is important you understand the importance of holding a confidence. The Group facilitator will normally have established ground rules for the group that includes confidentiality. Typically what is said within the room remains within the room!

Closing Thought…

“The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best” ~ Epictetus, (the Stoic philosopher)

As a kid I remember watching Entertainment Tonight and wondering, “What are the odds that two celebrities would marry each other?!”

As I grew older I realized that people become friends with people like themselves. Hence, celebrities marry celebrities. The same applies for bloggers. They all know each other and they all help each other out.

As a beginner blogger I realized this and thought, “If I want to be a big-time blogger, other big-time bloggers need to know about me. But how can I do that?”

Well, I’ve been at it for a few years now and I’ve started to make a little headway. This is how you can get bloggers to see and follow your blog.

Create a Follow-Worthy Blog

This is the first, most critical step. It also happens to be the most challenging because it’s the only one that’s not a matter of working through a to-do list.

Out of all the blogs I follow, here are five things they have in common:

  1. Clearly defined niche. They all focus on a very specific problem for a very specific audience.
  2. Distinctive voice. People know who wrote the post without seeing their name attached to it.
  3. Unique blog design. They have custom built blog designs.
  4. Creating from authority. They write based on what they know.
  5. Consistent content. They create regularly and reliably.

As you’re working towards this, move forward with the rest of this list.

Find Other Bloggers in Your Niche

Before you can have other bloggers follow your site, you need to find them. Here are a few ways I find bloggers:

  1. Search relevant keywords. You’ll find all of the top bloggers in your niche if you search the keywords that you want to rank for.
  2. See who your favorite bloggers interview. Bloggers interview the people they admire.
  3. Find top lists. If you’re able to find a few of the top ranking, top blogger lists, there’s a good chance that the top bloggers are actually featured.

As you work on your blog, follow people on Twitter, and subscribe to other sites, you’re naturally going to find other bloggers in your niche.

Comment on Their Blogs Regularly

Once you know who the top bloggers are, start reaching out to them by commenting on their blogs. Bloggers like comments because, to them, it shows that you’re engaged and that what they’re writing is important.

If you become a regular commenter, the blogger is more likely to recognize your name when you email or meet them.

If you comb through the comments section on bigger blogs, you’ll notice that even the A-listers comment on each others’ blogs. Here’s an insightful comment Yanik Silver left on one of Michael’s posts a few months back:

Yanik Silver Comment

Link to Their Posts in Your Posts

One thing bloggers appreciate even more than comments are links.

Make an effort to consistently link to your favorite bloggers, both as a value-added resource for your readers and as a favor to the blogger. When you link to one of their posts, it shows up as a trackback in the comments. They notice.

Here’s a post that David Risley wrote where he mentioned an article I wrote for Income Diary.

David Risley Round Up

Big-time bloggers like David Risley create “Round Up” posts because they understand the importance of building relationships with other bloggers while giving their readers new perspectives.

Include Them in a Flattering Top List

Remember how you can find top bloggers by looking through top lists? Well, one of the ways that bloggers climb to the top is by being included in these sorts of lists.

Michael has always told you how top lists rank well in search engines and get lots of social traffic (partly because the people included in the list share it).

So, if you really want to leave an impression on a blogger, feature them in a “20 Most Influential [your niche] Bloggers” list.

Michael Stelzner, from Social Media Examiner, even stopped by one of Income Diary’s top lists to leave his appreciation for being included. That’s one of the most shared posts on Income Diary.
Michael Stelzner Comment

Guest Post for Them

This one’s tricky.

Your guest post is going to be received as a blessing or a burden. Tommy Walker wrote a fantastic post on How to Write a Viral Guest Post for an A-List Blog. I encourage you to follow his process as closely as possible.

In that post, Tommy explains how he landed an once-in-a-lifetime spot on Chris Brogan’s blog with a guest post that took two years to create.

The gist of Tommy’s article is:

  1. Know everything about the blog and the blogger.
  2. Write something epic specifically for them.

Chris later told Tommy:

I don’t do guest posts on [chrisbrogan.com] for a bunch of reasons.

  1. Most people used to complain that they came to read me and that they didn’t want other people’s posts.
  2. People offering guest posts didn’t write anything of value (my opinion).
  3. People offering guest posts sent them horribly formatted and I’d spend 20 minutes fixing syntax errors.

Of these, #3 was probably the most annoying, and so I stopped bothering.

By the way, if you don’t know what a syntax error is, then you’re probably making them.

Interview Them for Your Blog

Along with getting included on a top list, bloggers like to do interviews. It gives them a chance to reach your audience as an authority of something that your audience is interested in.

For interviewing them you have two options:

  1. Email. Easier to conduct but more work for the blogger.
  2. Phone/Skype. Difficult to schedule but a higher quality interview.

As you’ll soon find out, I’ve conducted a lot of interviews. Bloggers need to be sold on why they should give you their time for an interview. Even for a site like Income Diary.

If you want help with this process, read How to Land A-List Interviewees for Your Blog.

Purchase Their Products

Bloggers and business owners always give preferential treatment to their customers. If you want to get noticed by them:

  1. Buy something from them.
  2. Implement what you purchased.
  3. Contact them and mention the results of using their product.

Readers contact bloggers every single day expecting them to answer tons of questions without ever having purchased something from their site. Then the reader gets frustrated when the blogger doesn’t respond immediately.

If you’re not a customer, how can you expect customer service?

Meet Them at a Conference

Outside of creating a follow-worthy blog, this is the most important thing you can do.

The reason I’m writing for Income Diary today is because I commented, interviewed, and met Michael at Yanik Silver’s Underground conference two years ago. At that conference, I also met Yanik Silver, David Risley, and Neil Patel. I rode in an elevator with Shoemoney and became good friends with David Aston.

If you’re serious about getting other bloggers to see and follow your blog, find out what conferences they attend and, in the abbreviated words of Tina Fey’s daughter, “go to there.”

The Final Word

I wrote most of this article from the perspective of getting big-time bloggers to see and follow your blog. But don’t underestimate the importance of reaching out to the bloggers on your level as well. These bloggers are a lot like you, and as such, their influence is growing. If you help each other early on, your blogs will grow together.

On a corporate level, sites like Mashable, Yahoo!, and CNN have syndication deals. Meaning, they’re constantly re-sharing each others’ content because they understand the importance of banding together.

On a final note, bloggers are masters at researching. If your blog is relevant to their audience and deserves to be found, they will find it.

If they haven’t found it, get crackin’.

It was a warm Colorado evening on May 28th, 2009 when, for the first time, I left a comment on IncomeDiary.com.

18 minutes later, Michael replied. Over the next two years, I left more comments, asked to interview him, was invited to D.C. to meet him, and today I’m writing for him.

Since then, I’ve made a game out of leaving comments on big sites with 100+ comments per post. My aim is always the same, to get the blogger to reply. Because if they do, I know that they at least know that I exist. At that point I can send an email and expect them to recognize my name.

With a fresh perspective as the blog post author, here are 10 tips on getting bloggers to reply to your comments.

Leave an Insightful Comment

The point of the comment section is to create a forum under the blog post. It’s like an extension of the original topic, a place where readers can go to get more opinions.

To effectively contribute to the original topic, you need to leave an insightful comment.

  • Offer a new opinion.
Adding your opinion does two things. (1) It shows that you read and thought about the concepts in the post. (2) It adds value to post.
  • Add another tip.
If the post is a tutorial and you have a bonus tip, offer up your advice in the comments. Who knows, you might even enlighten the blogger. They’ll remember that.
  • Answer the question they ask at the end of the post.
Lots of bloggers ask questions at the end of the post to stir up discussion. But very few people actually answer that question. There’s a reason they asked it.

The most important thing you can do when commenting is leave a comment worth reading.

Nicholas Tart Comment
I left that comment on Online Business Success in 2010 with a question that was spurred by the topic of the post.

Address the Blogger by Name

The best way to get somebody’s attention is to use their name.

I drop the name of the blogger in one of two ways:

Hey Rhonda, thanks for…

– or –

Thanks for the tip, Rhonda…

Addressing the blogger by name also shows that you recognize who wrote the post, which, for people who write for other sites, is nice.

Ask an Interesting Question

Simply dropping a question within your comment dramatically increases the likelihood of the blogger responding.

  • Questions make it easy.
It’s a lot easier to reply to a question than a normal comment.
  • Responses add value.
In the same way that the blogger wants valuable comments, they don’t want to clutter up the comment area with pointless replies. So, sometimes they only respond to questions.
  • Answered questions look good.
If a blog post has a lot of answered questions in the comments area, the blogger will look good.

Asking a question is like adding a call to action to your comment.

Nicholas Tart Question
Michael replied to that comment on Yaro Starak’s Interview because it was simple to answer.

Ask About Something They Sell

Want to boost your reply rate to nearly 100%? Ask the blogger about their product or service.

  1. It shows that you took some time to research their products.
Perhaps the best way to thank a blogger for their free information is to take the time to find out if their paid products are right for you.
  2. Their reply might make them money.
If you hint that you might be a new customer, you have priority.
  3. It brings attention to your comment and their product.
When I read a post on a big blog, I almost always scroll through the comments to find the comments that the author responded to. In turn, the author’s reply actually gets me to read about their product.

When they do the Q&A at the end of webinars, the host always gives preference to the questions about the product they’re selling.

Follow Their Advice

One of the best compliments you can give a blogger is to actually implement something they recommend.

Bloggers recognize that the more you implement their advice, the more you’ll benefit from their blog, and the more likely you’ll be to purchase something from them.

So, get in the habit of implementing the things you read about. It’ll help you two-fold.

Disagree with Their Advice

When I go through the comments, the “thanks for the tips” and “that’s great advice” comments start to get redundant. I appreciate them and they make this gig rewarding. It’s just that I don’t have a chance to learn from you unless you challenge my ideas.

I know a lot of bloggers feel this way.

What we really want is someone who politely challenges our advice, someone who adds value to the discussion by giving an opposing viewpoint.

The other nice thing about leaving your disputes in the comments is that it gives the blogger an opportunity to address it. Most of the time when someone disagrees with something, they leave. I respect the person who is bold enough to stand up for their thoughts, especially if they have a solid argument.

It reminds me of a Bill Gates quote:

“Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning.”

Reply to Somebody Else’s Comment

When somebody leaves a comment, it’s almost always a new comment, instead of a reply to an existing one.

When you reply to somebody’s comment, it:

  • Stands out.
From a design standpoint, replies stick out because they’re threaded.
  • Builds multiple relationships.
Instead of just addressing the blogger, you’re also acknowledging another reader. Plus, bloggers like when they’re readers start to get to know one another. It makes the blog sticky.

Start replying to people’s comments more often than simply adding a new one.

Nicholas Tart Reply
On How I Made $5,000 in the First Month I replied to Arron’s comment because I felt strongly about Michael’s position. This was more than a year-and-a-half before Michael asked me to write for Income Diary.

Reply to the Blogger’s Reply

Take that tip to the next level by replying to the author’s reply.

This comment will most certainly get read. And since the blogger is already engaged in the conversation, they’re more likely to reply.

Use Your Full Name and Get a Gravatar

These are two small tips packed into one.

When you use your full name, I’m more likely to remember that you commented before, which makes me think, “This person is a regular, I’m going to reply.”

If you don’t have an image next to your comments, go to Gravatar.com, set up an account, and upload an photo.

Then use the same email every time you comment on a WordPress site and the image will show up.

As the blogger, Gravatars and full names help me remember you.

Jamie Northrup Comment
For instance, the first Income Diary commenter that I think of is Jamie Northrup. He’s done a good job of leaving insightful comments on nearly every post I’ve written. Plus, he always uses his full name and he has a memorable Gravatar.

Leave a Comment Every Time

I commented on Income Diary 32 times before I started writing for it.

The more you comment, the more likely the blogger is to remember you. The more likely they are to remember you, the more willing they’ll be to help.

Here’s the first comment I ever left on Income Diary:

Nicholas Tart First Comment
From there, I left 9 more comments before I sent Michael an email. He responded to my email, I interviewed him, met him twice, and now we chat on a regular basis.

The Final Word

If you want to be successful online, one of the first things you need to do is start building relationships with other people in your niche. And the best way to start building relationships with those people is to start commenting on their blogs.

Tweets get lost. Facebook messages are intrusive. Emails are annoying. Bloggers will always love comments.

Part of the reason I’ve been writing about interviewing and publishing the last couple weeks is because we have a big project underway here at IncomeDiary.

The focus of the project is landing the best advice from the top A-lister interviewees. So far we’ve landed Neil Patel, Ryan Lee, and Pat Flynn, to tease you with a few.

By going through this process I’ve nailed down a system for landing these big-time interviewees.

#1 Find their Email or Other Contact Info

About two years ago the local paper wanted to do an urgent story on me. Over the course of an hour, the reporter emailed me, Twitter messaged me, LinkedIn messaged me, somehow found my phone number and gave me a call.

The first step in landing an A-list interview is finding their contact info. You should be able to find an email or email form for just about anyone with a few Google searches.

If you can’t dig up their email, try Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. In fact, busy people prefer Twitter because your message is limited to 140 characters.

#2 Send them a Simple Introductory Email

Once you have their email, you need to craft your introductory email. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Keep it short. If they open your email and it’s more than a few sentences, it’ll get set aside or buried.
  • Give them the bare essential benefits. In one sentence tell them about the project and why they should participate.
  • Tell them exactly what you want from them. If you want a one-hour and fifteen-minute interview conducted through Skype, tell them that.
  • Ask one specific yes or no question. The goal of the first email is to get them to say, “Yes, I’ll do the interview.”

Here’s a basic script you can use for this email:

Hi Pat,

My name is Nick Tart and I’m working with Michael Dunlop to put together… We’d like to schedule a one-hour interview with you to talk about blogging.

Are you interested?

If so, we’ll schedule a time to chat.

Nick

#3 If yes, Send them Time-Adjusted Dates to Schedule the Interview

Let’s say they agree to the interview. Reply by telling them your availability starting at least 3-4 days out.

When you give them a bulleted list of days and times, make sure you adjust the time to their time zone. Here are a few examples:

  • Monday 26th from 8am PST – noon, 2pm – 6pm
  • Tuesday 27th from 3pm PST – 7pm
  • Thursday 29th from 10am PST – 5pm

Also remind them exactly how long the interview will take.

#4 If No, Send Another Benefit-Packed Email

Sometimes they reply with, “my schedule is jam-packed through March,” or “I’m too hyper-focused on a project to set aside an hour,” or even, “I appreciate you thinking of me but I don’t believe I’m the right person for the interview.”

Now you need to decide how badly you want the interview. If you’re convinced that they’re the one, it’s time to send them a few more benefits:

  • Start by recognizing their objection. Say, “I understand that you’re busy/focused/humble and just know that you’re the one person in the world I want to interview for this.”
  • Sell them with a list of specific benefits. Tell them, “I have ## subscribers who will read your interview,” or “Some of the other people we’ve interviewed are (A-lister), (A-lister), and (A-lister),” or “We’re going to professionally produce your interview so it’ll be something you can use on your blog as well.”
  • Again recognize their objection. Sandwich the benefits with empathy and wrap up the interview by telling them how much you’d appreciate it.

#5 If No Again, Find Another A-Lister to Introduce You

Let’s say they decline once again. This means you’re a little closer to a yes.

Your last shot at landing the A-lister is to build your credibility. The best way to do this is to ask another A-lister to shoot over an email introduction. If you don’t know any other people they’d recognize, then you need to spend more time building relationships with other bloggers.

Successful people appreciate perseverance because they’ve been in your shoes. They probably even attribute part of their success to never taking “no” for an answer.

#6 Send a Reminder Email the Day Before

The day before you conduct the interview, send them a reminder email.

Subject: Interview Reminder: Tomorrow at 10am PST on Skype

Message:

  • List of interview questions or topics.
  • Your Skype ID if not already connected.
  • Tell them you’ll give them more details about the interview at the beginning of the call.

#7 Follow Up After the Interview

After you conduct the interview, ask them for a high resolution photo or any other details you need. Then make sure you send them a copy of the final interview for them to look over before publishing it.

That gives them a chance to make changes and they’ll get to see that you did a good job producing the interview.

The Final Note

I know it helps that I can drop Michael’s name in the emails for these interviews, but I used this same system to land Michael and many others as interviewees two years ago when I was just getting started.

Just because you don’t hear from the A-lister right away doesn’t mean they’re not interested. They’re just busy. It’s your job to earn their attention.

Interviewing successful people in your niche is a great way to boost traffic to your blog.

The problem is that most bloggers don’t have a clue how to properly interview someone. More often than not, the blogger fails to squeeze out any semblance of quality information so the interview is filled with fluff and the interviewee has no incentive to share the interview or even associate with you.

If you want to start creating awesome interviews for your blog, you need to follow these tips.

#1 Schedule and Conduct Live Interviews

I’m guessing that more than 90% of the internet’s interviews are conducted through email. There are three problems with that.

  1. Sometimes the interviewee is bad at writing.
  2. The interviewee tends to whip through the interview as quickly as possible only contributing surface-level answers.
  3. You don’t have a chance to ask tailored follow-up questions that get them to delve deeper into the subject.

If you want a high-quality interview, you need to conduct it live or through Skype. =

#2 Design Smart Questions

An interview is only as good as the questions that you ask. If you ask boring questions, you’re going to get boring answers. And nobody has time for boring content.

Here are some popular boring questions:

  1. Did you start with a business plan?
  2. How long did it take for you to reach profitability?
  3. What’s your best advice for making money online?

Here’s how you can reframe those boring questions into smart ones that’ll make it more fun for them to answer:

  1. Walk me through the step-by-step process that you went through to get to where you are today. What was the first thing you did? Next?
  2. How long were you running the business before you started paying yourself? How did you live through those first few months/years?
  3. If a kid walked up to asking for your advice and you only had a few minutes to give ‘em your best tip, what would it be?

Do you see the difference? Smart questions draw them into a frame of mind where they able to give you their best possible advice.

#3 Start with Small Talk

Once you get the interviewee on the other line, start with a few minutes of talking about where they’re from, their family, or even the weather (as cliché as it might be).

This makes them feel more comfortable talking with you and they’ll open up and tell you more of their secrets.

#4 Make Sure they Know the Audience

Your goal with any interview is to get the interviewee to provide the most valuable, specific advice tailored to your audience.

If they’ve never read your blog (which they probably haven’t), then it’s your responsibility to tell them everything about your audience, from the age, personality type, interests, etc.

#5 Set Expectations

Right before you start the interview, give them a roadmap of where you intend to take the interview. Tell them the questions or topics so they can structure their responses based on the information you want them to give in the order you want them to give it.

Also tell them how long you the interview will take and how you are going to record and distribute the content.

#6 Introduce Them

One of the most impolite things you can do in an interview is start it off by asking them to introduce themselves.

Prior to conducting the interview, spend at least an hour learning about your interviewee. Read their about page. Look through their latest blog posts. Try to figure out what they’ve been doing lately through Twitter or Facebook.

Then write a 2-3 sentence introduction that walks the reader/lister/viewer through who the interviewee is, why they’re important, and why the audience should pay attention.

Plus, if you ask the interviewee to introduce themself, they’re going to do so humbly and the audience won’t get a sense of how important that person is.

#7 Parroting

Another thing to keep in mind is that you want them to speak as much as possible while you speak as little as possible.

One way to do this is to parrot. Pick out one or two words from something they said and ask that phrase as a question.

For instance, if they say, “I attribute all of my success to optimizing our sales funnel.”

They you say, “Sales funnel?”

Then they’ll say, “Yeah, our sales funnel is…”

Anytime you want them to elaborate on a thought, use that technique.

#8 Transition through the Questions

The only time you should spend a little time talking is in between questions. Wrap up the question by summarizing their response. Then transition into the next question by relating it to their previous response. If you put some thought into crafting and organizing your questions, this will be easy.

#9 Anything Else You Would Like to Add?

This is the magic question to ask at the end of every interview. Asking them if there is anything else they would like to add has two benefits:

  1. It’s almost impossible to cover everything with your questions. This gives them an open door to talk about anything that they believe is important.
  2. It subconsciously tells them that the interview is about to wrap up which encourages them to summarize everything they’ve said up to that point in perhaps the most important two minutes of the interview.

It’s uncanny. The response to this question is almost always, “No, I think you covered everything, Nick. But I would like to say this…”

#10 Thank them and Direct People to Their Sites

At the end of the interview, thank them for taking the time, remind the audience of their name, and direct people to their websites.

Similar to the intro, don’t ask them to pitch their sites. Do it for them.

Bonus: What Can I Do Better?

You’ve heard the sales phrase, “Always be closing,” right? Well, I think you should also always be getting feedback.

Immediately after you wrap up the interview ask them if there’s anything you could’ve done better. They’ll appreciate you asking and you’ll find out how to improve.

It’s a lot more work to conduct the interview live, produce their audio/video, and transcribe then edit the content, but it makes a world of difference in the quality of the interview. Let’s make the internet a better place.

Today we have an interview (podcast and transcript) with another personal hero and mentor of mine – Mr Yanik Silver – Internet Marketing Superstar.

I first met Yanik in 2006 when I attended his Underground Online Seminar 2 in Washington DC. I had never before been to such a FUN, business event and I was literally blown away with the amount of information Yanik and the speakers provided. (This was also the event were I first met Ryan Lee) Even cooler for me, Yanik awarded prizes to members of the audience – such as in my case winning a prize for being the youngest attendee. When Yanik presented me with his Internet Copywriting workshop course (value something like $1497) I really did not know just what a remarkable influence on my life Yanik was about to become. Even though I was just a 17yr old “kid entrepreneur” Yanik went out of his way to inspire me and encourage me as he still does today. Thank you Yanik.

Just a few of the things revealed in this interview are Yanik’s philosophy on business, his passion for helping young entrepreneurs, plus some insights he got from hanging out with Sir Richard Branson in Necker Island and running his newest Business Maverick Business Adventures.

Yanik also introduces us to the principle of creating “Fish” or “Done For You” products – something I am starting to apply myself these days.

Enjoy the interview – I look forward to your comments

Very Best Wishes

Michael

PS: My Takeaway from this interview? Well as always with Yanik there are tons of Takeaways — but one that for me stands out a mile and which is also somewhat obvious is: Your questions dictate your Answers

So often in life and in business we ask ourselves the wrong questions – so next time you are looking for an answer – think “Am I asking the right question?”

Interview Transcript

Michael Dunlop: Hello everyone, this is Michael Dunlop from Income Diary and today I’m with Yanik Silver, who has being mentioned in dozens of our interviews and top lists and posts throughout the last seven months we’ve had the site up so it’s great to have him here today in person. Welcome Yanik.

Yanik Silver: Thanks Michael, yeah I’m excited to be here.

Michael: Okay Yanik’s being mentioned for a good reason and today we’ll get to share some great advice from him. So I’ll jump straight in with my first question which is – a lot of my readers are starting off with their online business, or blog, or website and so many of them are trying to put together their big idea – so what advice would you give them to bring it together?

Yanik: Well there’s, two parts to it. One is, I really think that, your questions dictate your answers, When I first got started online, I literally was kinda scoping out the scene and this was back in ’99 and I didn’t even have an email address back then and looking at some people that were selling information online and digitally delivering it that I’m like thought that’s an interesting thing. I could probably do that and I’d literally like ask myself the question you know, how can I create a fully automatic website that makes me money while I sleep, is an incredible value for people, and, and is not just an e-book and I’ll explain why, why that was important in a moment, and so literally at 3 o’clock in the morning one night I woke up and tapped my wife on the shoulder- I’m like “Missy, Missy, wake up, wake up, I got this great idea” and she’s like “Oh, please go back to bed” and I’m like “No, no, this is gonna be, this is gonna be really good” and I jumped out of bed and, and took action and so that was one of the key points was, was jumping out of bed and, and taking action, and that’s you know, one of the things that, that I see so many people falling down on – as I think everyone has at least one million dollar idea in, in their head and they don’t, they don’t take that, that positive action to, to get it going. That first idea was a little site called ‘Instant Sales Letters’ and that has gone on now to be my first, that was my very first million dollar product at forty bucks a clip so we sold a bunch of those.

Michael: Yeah, that’s, that’s incredible.

Yanik: Yeah, and, and actually kinda relates to, you know, what, what you mentioned before, Michael, was, you know, how, that the idea stage in, for young entrepreneurs and for those getting started, um, I’m a, I’m a big believer in having that big idea or having a, a big hook which is a unique angle, so like remember in my questions I said it can’t be an e-book, I wanted to differentiate what I was doing from other things out there in the market place at that point, so ‘Instant Sales Letters’ was a series of, of download-able templates that people could use and, you know, the technology behind this is pretty damn crude right now and I probably should update it but I haven’t, I haven’t touched it in probably five or six years, but the, the big idea of that was something that I call it a “fish product” and everyone has heard this saying – “you hand a man a fish you feed him for a day, if you teach a man to fish you feed him for life, well that’s kinda bullshit.

People want the fish handed to them you know, and you walk into a restaurant, you don’t want to go out back and go fishing for your dinner in most cases. You want it prepared really nicely by the chef and so that was what ‘Instant Sales Letters’ did and my wife even had a little bit of success kinda knocking me off with instant thank you letters, but you know, anytime you can give people a fish product I always think about okay, what, what can you do to make it push buttons simple for people – how do you give them something on a silver platter. Look at even like Matt Mullenweg and WordPress for example. I mean that, that really took off. I had the good fortune of meeting Matt Mullenweg, down in the British Virgin Islands actually along with your dad, and you know WordPress, I think what makes it so great, I mean there’s a lot of things, but part of it is that it’s so damn simple and it’s like, it’s like the fish product. It’s, it’s handing it to them on a platter for, for concept management, so there’s a lot of those out there and I’ve had good success with that and then the other really big point of the, the big idea is I always think about how can I go the opposite direction? I look at things like my underground online seminar which is a good example of that which stemmed out of me thinking about what’s in the market place right now? and this was five years ago and I’m like okay there’s a lot of internet seminars and there’s a lot of people doing it the exact same way, with pretty much the same speakers, so I thought, okay to really differentiate let’s go with really unknown speakers who are making a whole lot of money online, making millions of dollars but are doing it very quietly and most people never heard of and that was how the underground seminar was born so those are just two ways of coming up with a big idea.

Michael: That’s great advice, Yanik. I’m sure everyone could take something away from that, even myself, at the last MasterMind you had, my dad brought me along and I took away the idea of “done for you” which is sort of the same sort of principles, like, you know, give it to them done instead of teaching them how to do it.

Yanik: Yeah, some people are, are do it yourselfers and then a, a lot of us are, are kinda lazy and, and that’s not lazy in a bad way, but we’re all so busy. However if you present its as “done for you” and the give it to them on a silver platter it works much better. This stems through kinda everything that I try and do, everything from when we get our affiliates to help promote our products, for example you wanna provide your clients with all the tools that they need to do it, all the pre-done emails if possible, and banners, and so forth so they don’t have to think about it too much.

Michael: Yep, exactly and that’s probably touching on my next question- you, you mentioned that, uh, you were selling ‘Instant Sales Letters’ for just forty dollars, but like loads of my readers, um, you know, sending from twenty to a hundred dollars to sell over a million dollars worth you must of, uh, sold a lot, say what sort of, of tools or resources, or what was the idea that you used to sell so much?

Yanik: The biggest thing is partially what we covered is it had a good hook to it and so it got people excited, they could, as soon as they got the site or even heard the URL they, they kinda got what, what it was and that get the ball rolling. I really based a lot of my business on affiliate marketing, where we get other people to promote our products, drive traffic to our site, and right now we have about some forty some thousand affiliates which sounds impressing but the reality of affiliate marketing is that a tiny percentage actually produce business. It is not even like the 80/20 rule, the Pareto Principle, it’s more like a 97/3 rule or a 98/2 rule, so about two percent are, are driving ninety eight percent of your sales and traffic and, I mean, this is a total aside but I ran an affiliate program for, for one of my friends at one point and we had a hundred fifty affiliates only, and we generated about four million dollars in sales from, from those affiliates in one year, so you don’t need a ton of affiliates to do this right but, but affiliate marketing has always been one of my kinda arsenal weapons of choice because of the low risk involved, because of the fact that I only have to pay my employees once somebody that they referred has made a sale and so the very first thing that I did and it’s so simple and you can still today is, I started thinking about okay, well, where are my existing costumers already and at that point I went to AltaVista search engine which, I don’t even know if it’s still around? Obviously you would go to Google today and maybe a couple of other search engines, but just type in a couple of your keyword phrases and see who else is coming up on top, so who’s in the top ten, so I typed in ‘sales letters’ and I would see, okay, you know, one of the top ones was like a university, they’re not going to promote for me, obviously, or it would be pretty hard to get them to promote for me and then, you know, so I went through the list of top ten, top twenty sites and obviously those top ten, top twenty, had the traffic that I was looking for and so I just contacted them in a very personal way, not in a spam me sort of way, and, and just said ‘hey, you know, I created this site called Instant Sales Letters I think, the visitors coming to your site might be interested in this if you wanna come, go check it out here’s a password for it” and you know, I think I got like one or two of those people to, to respond and say “yeah, okay” and then they promoted it and then what I did was kinda of like a, a Chinese water torture where just, we just kept, uh, following up on the rest of those, those hot prospects with, with the results from, from the guys who promoted it so, I just kept them posted: “hey, you know, so and so just promoted this and they made this” and I think I got about thirty, nah, probably like forty percent of my top twenty people to sign up as affiliates pretty quickly and from there it just kinda, kinda grew where we’d advertised it a little bit, we still do some paperclip advertising, but, uh, to tell you the truth the affiliate program the affiliate network is probably the biggest thing that ever really runs it. Articles that I’ve done have helped, but the affiliate program, that is the big one.

Michael: Alright, great, great advice, Yanik. You have got more than just one product here, you got dozen of products and services and events now and you got hundreds of thousands of people following what you’re doing and contacting you, how do you sort of keep up with all of this and what advise would you give to other entrepreneurs with a lot on their plates right now?

Yanik: Ha, I don’t know, you got to figure out where your breaking point sort of is.  I mean I love having multiple things on the go and for some people they like having only one thing on the go. Instant Sales Letters was my very first thing and the funny thing is, uh, that’s probably the most entrenched thing I did because I focused solely on that and built that up and had a good foundation around it and then the other things kinda came as a, as a creative byproduct of, of ‘Instant Sales Letters’ I mean, within four months I was on track to do six figures a year and that’s when people started asking me “hey how did you do this and can you teach me how to do the same thing and that’s how I started creating internet marketing related products based on what I’ve done and so that was all just this weird, you know, side by-product that, well my original goal was to sell ‘Instant Sales Letter’ for half a million dollars to like stamps.com or something like that but, but I wouldn’t, I wouldn’t do that today for, just because it’s a great engine that drives a lot of the other things that we’re doing. I try and focus in on what I’m really good at and I’ve taken a lot of different self assessment tests throughout the years and I think any kind of time that you spend leaning about yourself, learning about your strengths, learning about where you fall down, what you suck at, is all, is all really good time that’s proactive. I mean I’ve literally done everything from like a two day test at the Johnson O’Connor Human Engineering Institute, which is, I think they have locations all around the US, I don’t, they probably have some internationally too, to things like now the Discover Your Strengths, Kolbe Profiling, which is a really good test which is online which is ‘Kolbe.com’ um, created by a woman named Kathy Kolbe which is your connotative ability which is like your natural inclination of how you work and I found that, that really fascinating and, you know, for me, my number which won’t mean anything to you right now, but it’s a 24 or 10-2 but the ten is the area called quick start, which mean how quickly do I initiate a project without knowing what the hell I’m doing and, so a lot of entrepreneurs are behind that quick start and just knowing, you know, knowing a lot of these things about yourself helps you to realize what, what you’re really good at, what, what gives you passion, and for me it’s, it’s definitely the ideas, it’s the start up phase, it’s the, um, it’s coming up with the, the big hook, the big ideas, and a lot of entrepreneurs are like that and, and you gotta, you gotta sometimes partner up with someone who’s, who’s the opposite. I mean, I just hired, a VP of operations – so now I’m in charge of figuring out where we’re going and the vision and the big ideas and then he’s in charge of how are we gonna get there and I’ve found that throughout the years that I’ve done this it’s been really helpful of me bringing my strengths to the table and then having a partner in a lot of cases who has different strengths. A lot of people bring a partner in for the wrong reasons, they bring him in for comradery, or just having somebody to commiserate with. I think it’s a good time to bring people in if they compliment your strengths, so they’re, you know, whatever you’re weak at is where they’re strengths are, hopefully.

Michael: No, that’s a, spot on, I’ve recently got somebody working with myself and I did it for exactly those reasons and it’s helped my business so much it’s, it’s great. Uh, okay, okay so, um, as you mentioned you’ve got so many different things going on like, uh, you have your physical book, e-books, you run seminars, you got your physical newsletter, MasterMind trips, and so on and what is your favorite business model and why?

Yanik: You said favorite business model or business?

Michael: Ah, business model, sorry. Which one of them would you…

Yanik: You know it’s kinda weird, and I would’ve answered this probably differently two years ago and I still love this business model because I think it’s probably one of the best for people that want to break into doing something on their own and, and want to create a nice lifestyle business and that is Information Marketing. I’m such a big believer in having these high margins, low cost produced products, whether it is an e-book, or a membership site, or, or a home-study course, or even a series of seminars or events. I think creating info-products and you can do really well with them and, and its also one of the easiest most lucrative, most fulfilling business models that you can come up with because you get to impact other people. I’ve worked with students from, you know, one guy, one of my favorites is this college kid that came to me and, and he knew how to take engines out of a Honda Accord and put it into a Honda Civic because uh, because they share the same engine or something like that and he, he put it out on a CD-rom and after I worked with him for a little bit he did a hundred thousand dollars a year selling that information to other, other you know mostly kids that wanted to mod their Hondas and, uh, his mom accused him of selling drugs out of his dorm room, he had that much money, yeah so, I, I got a good laugh out of that and I enjoyed that so, you know that’s just one example of selling information and I, I think, you know, we have students who’ve done everything from potty training, to guitar lessons, to financial related things, and I, so I love that model and even if you don’t think you’re an expert at something, I’ve taught repeatedly about taking public domain information and so information that has fallen out of copyright, for whatever reason, and, and just using that. We have, we have stuff that we created, about houseplants that, that sell and about for artists how to, uh, how to draw people better so we’ve done little, little projects like that just to show people how, how easy it is. Um, or I mean, you become almost like a publisher and like what you and I are doing right now, Michael, you’re interviewing me and there’s no reason that, that if you picked out a marketplace, like let’s say I don’t know training parrots how to do tricks, or something like that, you talk to a vet, you talk to, I don’t know, an animal trainer, and you just have a couple interviews and you package them up into a little course that teaches, uh, people how to, how to train their parrots, or whatever marketplace you decide. So I love, I love information and I think, you, um, there’s so many multiple ways they could deliver it now that gets really exciting, whether it’s via.. all the way up to iPhone, to the most simplistic, which is a regular book, which so many people are familiar with and delivering via kindle, delivering via online membership site, there’s just a ton of ways of doing that. Now, so like I said that would have been my answer two years ago, and I still love that, that business model. Um, today, I, you know, I’m evolved as an entrepreneur and part of what I really, what I really lean and get attracted to is passionate, passionate projects so, not only should there be a good solid business model or margin to it, but I, I think it should be something that hopefully gets you excited, that you can have fun with, and, and that yeah, just really revs you up.

Michael: Well hit. Yeah, yeah, I completely agree with that as well. Um, so, that sort of leads me to my next question, actually, you’re well known for the Internet Lifestyle, and I guess that’s sort of what you were just talking about, so what’s your favorite thing about the Internet Lifestyle?

Yanik: For me the Internet Lifestyle means: fun, freedom, financial independence funded by the internet (lot of F’s in there) maybe we could call it the, the F-bomb Internet Lifestyle 😉 My favorite thing is that internet is an amazing golden opportunity right now, a golden age where literally for a couple bucks and a semi-decent idea you can get started and see what happens and the coolest part is we can just grab our laptops. You can run our business from just about anywhere via Skype, via instant message, via gmail and that to me is the coolest part. I mean there’s got to be a balance to, to your entrepreneurship and to, to your whole life, I mean, really that’s where the fun part kicks in and I’m, you know, we could definitely talk about that for a while, but on, on ‘internetlifestyle.com’, which is, which is my blog, I have a whole running list called my ultimate big life list, and some of the things that, that I want to accomplish and, and so that, that keeps me motivated beyond any sort of monetary thing and, and just, uh, the, the freedom. That I think that’s probably the biggest driver for entrepreneurs, if you’re gonna kinda get down to what is the essence of entrepreneurship in, in a lot of cases, it was the freedom that, that drives them and you, you don’t want to get in a situation where, where you lose sight of that and your business really becomes a, a job for you, you wanna, and you have to, and it’s definitely a constant process of being vigilant because, you know, for me, I can keep taking more and more new projects and I’ll never leave my office even though my office is out of my house but still, you gotta have that, that balance and create that fun and the freedom for you and then another element that I kinda just added, like I said I’ve been evolving as an entrepreneur and I have this notion of, not just making more money, not just having more fun, but now it’s about giving, giving more back, so combining all this together I think becomes an optimal business bliss.

Michael: Alright, great. And is this the reason why you launched Maverick Business Adventures or what did inspire you to create that business?

Yanik: Yeah, partially that. It was partially around this, uh, idea, I was kinda, ah, a little burnt out on just the internet marketing thing that I was doing and it wasn’t totally fulfilling to me and I, I made a list of all the things that I would love to have in an ideal business and it was things like: adventure, unique experiences, hanging out with really smart entrepreneurs, brainstorming, um, helping the next generation of young entrepreneurs, and philanthropy, and, and giving back, and having an impact and, and so that was the impetus turn for Maverick Business Adventures. I don’t know where it’s gonna lead to, but I, but I got some, some pretty big ideas for it with, uh, not just this high, high level group of, of entrepreneurs that, that are million dollar plus businesses, but, but hopefully expanding to, to a whole, whole series of groups. I mean, my ultimate goal by 2020 is to have a million, a million young entrepreneurs ages 13-23 start their own businesses and based on mentorship, blueprints, strategies and the secrets that, that a lot of Maverick members would be sharing and creating that, that platform for, for the next generation.

Michael: Which, I mean, everything there just sounded so great to me as well. I mean, I think, for a lot of entrepreneurs it’s hard to, sort of, talk about business to normal people so Maverick Business Adventures sounds like a, a great opportunity for everyone to, sort of, connect on a better level.

Yanik: Yeah definitely, I mean at the highest level it’s everything from hanging out at Sir Richard Branson’s Island and doing all sort of cool activities, and plus raising a lot of money for his charity to like next year we’re going to South Africa. That will be a great trip and we’re going to the finals of the Soccer World Cup, and the semi-finals, and cage diving with sharks, and going on a safari and at the same time while we’re there we’re teaching at the Branson School of Entrepreneurship some kids that we’ve actually already been mentoring with, so it, it combines those three things, those elements that, that I’ve always loved all throughout my life and now I’m just, I just have, uh, kind of, uh, a, I don’t know, a holder for all of them in, in one place.

Michael: Great Yanik. I mentioned at the beginning of the interview you are probably, you are the most mentioned person on this site. You come up all the time. Why do you think you’ve come across so well on the Internet? Is it because you just provide the best value or what do you think is the best way to be seen as the best, I think I just answered that myself, but…

Yanik: Well, I definitely appreciate that, it’s very uplifting and it’s great, maybe it’s just because I have a unique name, I think, uh…

Michael: We know that’s not the case.

Yanik: Well I’ve attempted to be really conscientious about focusing on the things that I expect from myself and I mean, literally if I look up my planner right now on October 6th 1998, (Which was when I felt like I was first getting out of this really big upward trajectory) and one of the big things that, that I wrote there was “I’m rich by enriching others ten times to a hundred times what they pay me in return” and I think that’s, that’s a big element of what, what I really, really, really try and , and focus on, whether it’s a product for forty dollars like the ‘Instant Sales Letters’, I wanna make sure that someone gets at least four hundred to four thousand dollars, and I return to our MasterMind, which is twenty thousand dollars so I wanna make sure that people get a tremendous ROI and I’m, I’m always, uh, attempting to do that, always looking for ways that we can, we can add value, we can provide, you know, some unexpected bonuses. Just, just really having that intention out there, I think helps a lot.

I’m rich by enriching others ten times to a hundred times what they pay me in return

Michael: Well that’s really powerful stuff and I’m not surprised you do so well after hearing that. So we have a lot of, we have lot different aged people on this site, but in particular we have a lot of young entrepreneurs and I thought we’d just quickly mention, you’re doing a pre-day at your underground event in March 2010 – so what would you say to any young entrepreneur out there who is starting an online business right now?

Yanik: I would tell them A) congratulations because I think it’s one of the most exciting things that you could do and, and I’m really excited about the recent statistics that I’ve seen, that say that, that kids coming out of high school, it’s about seventy percent now wanna, wanna start their own business or do their own thing and, and it used to be only maybe about twenty years ago that the statistics were completely opposite where seventy percent wanted to get a job and, and work for, work, work for a big company and have that security and, and I don’t think that there’s any security in that. I think the security in your life comes from having the self assurance and, and the knowledge of knowing that you can literally start from nothing and create something incredibly valuable that, that, that you know, essentially, that the career cash on demand, money, value, pretty much whatever you want. I would tell you another couple other pieces of advice that, that I would, that I’d like to share on that is, you know, a lot of time the, there’s, there’s thinking around, well, you know, if I, I need a lot of money to, to start this business and that’s all bullshit. You don’t, you don’t need a lot of money. On every Maverick Adventures multiday trip that we go on we spend time with a group of, of young kids, uh, in, in every location and I remember this pretty vividly from this last one that we did in San Francisco and we had, I don’t know, maybe like forty kids there or something and I had a panel of the Maverick members up there and I love asking them how much, how much money did you start your business with because it’s, it’s always revealing and a lot of them are like, you know, Tim Huston, from Internet Lifestyle, he said five dollars and, you know, that, that was cool. Um, some of the guys are a couple hundred dollars. One guy, um, who trains fitness trainers, he has a multimillion dollar business now, but his very first business that he started, he started with something like, I think he told me either two hundred or three hundred thousand dollars and that was the one that failed. The one that succeeded was the one that started with a couple hundred dollars and having a so called lack of capital, I think, it forces you to you get creative, it forces you to just not throw your money at, at a problem and cause you’re always gonna have either an excess of time or an excess of money and it’s, it’s, it’s, that’s where the creativity comes from and, and coming up with unique ways to market, uh, what you’re doing and, you know use the natural kinda gift that you got, the, the media is definitely fascinated by young entrepreneurship, but use, use the media to your advantage, that’s all free. Um, I mean, everyone has grown, grown up with, with all sorts of connection points around Facebook and Twitter now and, and, you know, a bunch of other social media sites, use those your advantage to, to build, build your, your marketplace up. So, so start, you know, just start, that, that’s probably the biggest thing and just get into motion and start thinking about what’s the best use of my time and I would also, you know, I, I definitely would stress something that I did really early on was, was learn about direct response marketing and that’s, that’s what I think when you break it all down is, is what the Internet comes down to and, and so I would study like from a hundred years ago to like all the best mail order practitioners because, you know, what, what we’re really trying to do is, in some way shape or form, influence peoples’ actions whether it’s a click whether it’s get them to buy just through the computer screen and, and now we have a lot of different tools that are at our disposals from video to, to live messaging and, and SMS, all sorts of stuff, but back then a hundred years ago, you know, people had to walk down to their mailbox or, or their local mail post and, and place that order. Uh, and, and it would be hard to get them to do that. So if you can learn and study what, what psychology went into that, you can apply that, and not in a, not in a deceptive way, not in a, not in a way that’s used for evil, but in a way, a way that gets people to, uh, gets them to see that you’re product or service is a real benefit to them and, and you gotta have that, this element of, of persuasion there in a good way. One of my favorite books that I’ve read nine times on that is by a guy named Robert Ciladini called Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.

Michael: Brilliant, top advice, Yanik. Actually, been looking into that myself, so, cool. Uh, if you could go back in a time machine, if it was possible, uh, what would you do differently?

Yanik: That is a good question. You know what, the funny thing is I’ve asked this question of a lot of people too when I interview them and I always cringe when I answer this, because it comes out the same way as so many other people’s answers, that I’ve asked this of and it is that I wouldn’t change too much because I really think we all develop at the right time – you know, what is that saying- “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”, or something like that?

I think you have to go through certain things to, to kinda, kinda come into your own, so I wouldn’t, I wouldn’t really change too much, I mean, you know, maybe I would’ve got started with having more continuity in my business quicker. So that means some sort of ‘Of The Month’ kind of thing, whether it’s a newsletter or membership site or, you know, something that, so we know every single month in, month out, that there’s X amount of income coming in. Um, I probably would’ve got, got smarter around testing prices sooner, all the things where, you know, you realize that you’re leaving money on the table when you’re looking back at, at, at what you’ve done. You know, selling a bunch of those ‘Instant Sales Letters’, I mean, we had an up-sell originally, very quickly, but you know we never, we never added any sort of continuity to it or anything like that. Um, I don’t know, I mean, I think, definitely everything develops in the right time, so, so I don’t think I would change too much.

Michael: Yeah, cool. I mean, about ninety percent, probably, of people I interview, they sort of look at it the same way, you know, in the, they like the way, the route they’ve taken because, uh, they’ve learned from everything they’ve done wrong and if they didn’t have the opportunity to do things wrong then they probably wouldn’t have learned the lessons.

Yanik: Yeah, absolutely.

Michael: Alright, cool. I’ve got a, a few quickfire questions for you to end the interview – The first is what do you like most about the Internet?

Yanik: I love the way that you can literally come up with an idea at, at 3o’clock in the morning and depending on how fast you are, what kinda skills you got, or what kinda skills you got on your team, that within a day or, or at most a couple weeks, you can have something out there and see what happens. I mean, you get that instant feedback, that’s what, that’s what’s so exciting, you get instant feedback around, around an email that you send or, or a twitter or, or, you know, whatever, and, and that’s exciting to me.

Michael: Wicked. And what do you like least about the Internet?

Yanik: What I like least about it is that it’s too easy to get wrapped up and sidetracked in a hundred different weird, random things that, that makes you think like you’re, you’re doing something productive but you’re really not.

Michael: Twitter.

Yanik: Well, possibly, yeah. If you’re in there for a strategic reason or, uh, you know like, like the other day I connected with the CMO of Kodak on Twitter so that was a strategic thing I wanted to do and go in there and set up this interview and that happened, but if you’re just kinda socializing, unless you got a plan for what you want to achieve it’s too easy to get sucked into your screen 24/7.

Michael: Cool. And, uh, who do you look up to? Um, who’s your role model for your business?

Yanik: As trite as it sounds, Sir Richard Branson is definitely my role model. I’ve been really fortunate and had the opportunity to hang out with him a couple times now and he’s one of the few kinda role model / inventors that I’ve met that once I’ve met them I’ve been even more inspired.

Michael: That’s always good.

Yanik: Yeah, I just love the fact that he’s not afraid to put himself out there. I mean, he runs multiple businesses, there is something like three hundred Virgin companies out there, that, that’s really inspiring to me because as, as an entrepreneur, with ADD (I haven’t been diagnosed with it, but I’m sure I got it) – you know, I love that, that aspect of it. I love the way that he’s created, he’s sort of imprinted his DNA on the companies and that cheeky sort of behavior, if I can steal a British term. He totally lives his life on his terms and that to me is the big inspiring point. You know there’s a lot of very wealthy, rich entrepreneurs that just seem pretty damn boring.

Michael: Yeah, well they say life is an adventure, so go live it.

Yanik: Yeah, make it one.

Michael: Yeah, wicked. And what is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Yanik: You know what, it’s not something that I’ve been given directly, but there are some audio and print programs by a guy named Earl Nightingale – one is called ‘Lead the Field’ and is the most popular one but, I really like ‘The Strangest Secret’. So I study a lot of his stuff, even like really random obscure stuff and one thing that, that I really took to heart from, from him was: if you wanna become an expert in any subject you have to read or study for one hour a day on that subject material for three years, and if you wanna become a world class expert you read or study for one hour a day for, for five years. In my formative kinda entrepreneurial years where I think I was about eighteen when I first got impacted by learning about stuff like direct response marketing and also because of what I learned from Earl Nightingale I said “Well, you know, what would happen if you study for two hours a day or three hours a day”? – so you know what I just really ramped up for my my success.

Michael: Cool. Alright, so thanks very much for, um, being here today, Yanik. We’re taking some great advice away from you. Is there anything, uh, any last things you’d like to tell us, any personal business plans you have, or would you like to quickly mention the underground?

Yanik: Sure, I’ll mention the underground – after all you’re gonna be facilitating the Young Mogul day, that we’re having this year as the pre-day to Underground. It takes place March 12th-14th, 2010 in DC, with the Young Mogul day on the 11th, and that’s going to be really exciting and we’ll be releasing that soon. I’m sure that they’ll hear about it from you and, um, yeah, I don’t know, I mean I have, uh, we got, we got a lot of great big plans in place for this new vision of, uh, like I, I mentioned the, the one million young entrepreneurs getting started and it’s going to be part of an association that we’re going to be calling the, uh, the ‘Maverick One Million Association’, so that’ll be at ‘maverickonemillion.org’ so look for, look for something there pretty soon.

Michael: Alright, thanks very much, Yanik.

Yanik: Thanks, Michael. Appreciate it.

Hello Everyone

Today I am very pleased to introduce you to an amazing Female Internet Entrepreneur that runs the blog network, blogher. Her name is Lisa Stone and today she has been kind enough to spend some time teaching us about being a successful Internet entrepreneur.

If you want to read more about Lisa, then I recommend you check out her blog and follow her on Twitter.

Could you describe what you do and how you earn your living Lisa?

I am one of three co-founders and the CEO of BlogHer, the leading participatory news, entertainment and information network for women online. In addition to the usual duties of a chief exec, I work across the organization to advocate for bloggers and marketing partners that fulfill the company’s vision.

You have such an interesting past, you started as a print journalist where you worked for many years and then went online. How did you make the transition from offline to online journalist? Which do you prefer?

I love both! Do I have to choose? After college, I worked my way up through various San Francisco Bay Area newspapers until I became a transportation reporter for the Oakland Tribune and broke a series of Freedom of Information Act stories on the FAA. I transitioned to CNN for two years in strategic planning, analyzing programs and producing pilots, until 1997, when I decided to move online. After helping develop Women.com as executive producer and then editor in chief, I was awarded a Nieman Fellowship by Harvard University. I’ll always be grateful for that fellowship, which gave me the opportunity to start studying and developing new media business models.

You are the founder of BlogHer which is a large community for female bloggers, what inspired you to create it? Where are you with it now?

Elisa Camahort Page, Jory Des Jardins and I co-founded BlogHer in 2005 to answer the question “Where are the women bloggers?” What started as a labor of love with a conference for 300 bloggers looking to connect with other women online has become an organization that now produces a conference series, a Web community and news hub featuring a directory of more than 20,000 women’s blogs and a publishing network of more than 2,500 bloggers reaching 14 million unique visitors per month.?Our mission is the same: To create opportunities for women who blog to pursue exposure, education, community and economic empowerment.

I understand that BlogHer reaches more than 14 million women monthly through its conferences, Internet site and publishing networks, how have you managed to build such a huge following?

It’s amazing what a community of people will tell you about what they want, if you just ask. Elisa, Jory and I were bloggers who wanted to develop something for the community of which we were and are part of, so we kicked off BlogHer in listening mode – by asking other women who blog what they wanted, not telling them. That’s a key differentiator that allowed us to support the community first, then figured out how to grow a business model to serve the community. So many companies build a business model – or, in traditional media, a newspaper or a magazine or a show – and then push it into the market and try to figure out how to get people to buy into it. When the user is in charge of her online experience and her habits evolve daily, it’s better to develop organically.

You do a lot of blogger meetups, why should other bloggers and Internet entrepreneurs consider meeting up? What’re the advantages?

While we focus primarily on BlogHer’s annual conference, we also have more informal meet-ups. These get-togethers are great opportunities for our community to get to know each other better and really put faces to blogs, and also for us to connect with our members and hear valuable feedback on our work. It’s one thing to read someone’s blog religiously, but another to be able to talk to people in person – nothing replaces it. Elisa, Jory and I absolutely love meeting our members and finding out how our site and conferences can better serve the community.

So many people start blogging to make money and because of that, they don’t blog about their passion. Why should new bloggers blog about their passion before making money online?

Blog technology is like a printing press – it’s a tool for people to do with whatever they choose and it’s not my role to judge any blog’s priorities. If you’re asking me why passion matters and can help create a blog that attracts readers and enough revenue to pay the writer for her time, I definitely have an opinion! If you blog about topics which you are passionate about, it is pretty evident to your readers. When you write about something you are truly interested in, you tend to offer more value, your enthusiasm shines through your words and your readers sense that and get excited along with you. It makes readers return to read your work again and again, which helps develop an engaged audience with more value to any sponsors. I find that many bloggers really are passionate about their writing, and making money is a bonus.

BlogHer was founded by yourself, Elisa Camahort Page and Jory Des Jardins, I know you find having partners a huge benefit to your business. Why should other Internet entrepreneurs team up and go into business?

I’m very lucky to have amazing co-founders, and our ability to work as a team is definitely a critical component in our success. I would encourage Internet entrepreneurs to team up and go into business if they can find what we have. We have complementary skills, diverse backgrounds and, amazingly, identical drive and energy. It’s great to have partners to bounce ideas off of, share the stress with and basically make each other smarter. I really enjoy Elisa and Jory, but I now think the most important ingredient in any working relationship is integrity – we trust each other and are able to be honest and up-front with each other, about the good stuff and the tough stuff.

What advice would you give other women considering to make money online or blogging?

Love what you do – that’s not a cliché. You have to love what you do enough to want to write about it long-term – in my case, writing about women and politics, media and current events. Once you love what you do, conduct yourself professionally. Does everything you write pass the “homepage test,” where you’d be happy if it were published on the front page of Google News for the world to see – or could it embarrass you later? Having policies for your site and following very transparent ethical guidelines about everything from how you manage comments on your blog to how you monetize it, should you choose to do so, will maintain your credibility and earn even more respect from your readers.

Over 53% of all Internet users are women, can any women come online blogging and be as successful as yourself?

My answer depends on how you’re defining success – blogging is a wonderful personal platform from which women can springboard into success in many ways. Any woman can go online and become a successful blogger. Success for some is being able to express ourselves and exercise our writing talent. Others are thrilled also to be able to cover our hosting costs or even our monthly grocery bills. BlogHer, on the other hand, is not just a blog; BlogHer is a media company. And the entire media landscape is in flux these days. You have to be a marathoner to develop a community that sticks together for years – not to mention to win in the media business, which changes daily. We hustle!

Running an Internet Business gives you choices and freedom to do what you want, when you want. Would you say the Internet Lifestyle is for you?

The freedom of living an Internet Lifestyle is that my work is portable and allows me to bring it with me when I travel – and, back in 1997, allowed me to leave the traditional newsroom when I had a baby and couldn’t travel as much but still wanted to work in news. But being a co-founder of a company like BlogHer, of any Silicon Valley start-up, really, doesn’t give you much time to “do what you want, when you want.”

What would you say is the biggest single reason for your success?

Leading through listening. BlogHer’s success is all about our ability to grow and maintain our community, as I described above. We like to say that the BlogHer Conference is the “conference the community built,” and that’s the test we apply to everything we do.

Working with the end in mind is something I think about every day, where do you see yourself in a few years time? Do you have an exit plan in mind?

Right now, we’re still growing and developing BlogHer as a company, so we are really focused on meeting our goals, especially in this tough economic environment. We’re not going to take our eyes off the proverbial ball to think too much about an exit right now.
