Successful entrepreneurs think differently!

They approach problems, fear and failure differently to the ‘normal’ person.

Successful entrepreneurs know that the impossible is not a fact, it is an opinion!

Above all, the successful entrepreneur has an optimism and a zest for life that transforms everything they do.

21 Ways Successful Entrepreneurs Think Differently about Life, Fear, Failure and Success

from fear and failure to success

#1 Failure is only failure if you believe it is

Hands up! Who knows a successful entrepreneur who has not experienced failure?

Take Jeff Bezos for example – founder and CEO of Amazon.com. Amazon was not always the huge success it is today and a long the way Amazon made some ‘wrong turns’ and ‘learning experiences’ as I call them. Examples include Amazon Auctions, Amazon zShops and more recently the Fire Phone.

But Jeff Bezos did not let those ‘failures’ define him. In referring to failed projects Bezos told the Business Insider Ignition conference in December 2014 that “I’ve made billions of dollars of failures at Amazon.com. Literally billions.”

He also told the conference that dwelling on the failures would be akin to having “a root canal with no anesthesia”.

Even the Big Internet Gurus will tell you they failed before they succeeded!

No great Entrepreneur has achieved much without first overcoming the Fear of Failure.

Failure does not define you.

The entrepreneurial journey will have many twists and tunes – sometimes you will be cash positive, sometimes you will be cash negative. It is how you handle these twists and turns that defines you!

The Top Entrepreneur makes Fear their Slave, not their Master!

If youre not failing every now and again, it’s a sign youre not doing anything very innovative.” – Woody Allen

#2 The meaning you attach to events determines your attitude and response

Your interpretation of events is what really matters!

For example, successful entrepreneurs ‘give up’ all the time. Except they don’t call it giving up!

I mean, if something is not working, what is the point in repeating it endlessly?

No entrepreneur gets every decision correct – Even the best sometimes hire the wrong staff or misjudge the market. (Think Jeff Bezos again)

Yet, so many people just can’t let go, even when it is obvious something is not working.  They are too focused on the time and money they have invested, imagining that somehow investing even more time and money would fix it!

Above all, successful entrepreneurs have great business judgement – they know when to cut their losses and move on!

As Albert Einstein said:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Of course this does not mean you should give up easily – we still need to work and apply ourselves but as one of my mentors said to me many years ago: “He always reserved the right to change his mind about anything in the light of new information…”

I have always thought that a good strategy to live by.

In any case, no time is ever wasted if you learned something new or grow as a result!

#3 Successful Entrepreneurs take responsibility.

Successful people don’t blame others, they take responsibility for their outcomes.

Losers on the other hand make others responsible for their failure.

Doe Zantamata, the creator of the Happiness in Your Life book series has something very powerful to say about responsibility and blaming others…

“If a person doesn’t want to take responsibility for their actions, they may try to blame others. Don’t accept blame or try to fix things when you’ve done nothing wrong. They need to learn that if they want different outcomes, they will have to make different choices. If you fix things for them, it deprives them from learning to take responsibility and their actions will repeat with different circumstances. You’ll then be the first they’ll blame or try to have fix things for them because you did before. That can lead to a very destructive cycle which will only stop when you do.”

#4 Successful Entrepreneurs ask better questions

Successful entrepreneurs know that the questions they ask yourself determine their feelings.

We have conversations that are going on in our head all the time. These ‘conversations’ determine our feelings!

Ask yourself poor questions, get poor answers.

Common conversations entrepreneurs have include:

What if this doesn’t work out?

What if I can’t make payroll this month?

On the other hand, successful entrepreneurs ask creative and inspiring questions like:

What is the problem I’m looking to solve?

Who is going to buy and why?

How will my idea benefit my customers and society?

Recommended Reading: 5 questions entrepreneurs should ask themselves

I like this question in particular…

Are you learning from the mistakes you’ve made?

You are in charge of your feelings.

#5 Money is merely a form of energy

For many entrepreneurs, their biggest worry is debt / money.

Be an entrepreneur long enough and the chances are high that you will have face bankruptcy or having to make arrangements with our creditors.

When you’re in debt, you’re controlled.

But what if you looked at it differently?

There’s an old banking proverb: “If you owe the bank thousands (a small amount), then you have a problem. If you owe the bank millions (a large amount), then the bank has a problem.”

Or to put it another way: “If you owe the bank thousands (a small amount), then the bank owns you. If you owe the bank millions (a large amount), then you own the bank.”

Many years ago, a mentor of mine called Stuart Wilde gave me an education about debt.

Stuart pointed out, that when you’re in the business of lending money, you actually allow for some people not paying you back.

In fact, he said, “Barry, if a certain percentage of borrowers did not repay occasionally it would upset the whole apple cart!”

I mean, they had factored in risk and bad debt and it would be a shame to disappoint them!

OK, tongue in cheek, but hopefully you get the point.

Of course, if you borrow money you should use your best endeavors to repay – but never let that debt own you or destroy you!

In his book, The Trick To Money Is Having Some, Stuart Wilde shows you that money is merely a form of energy, and that the difference between having it and not having it is merely a small but subtle shift in consciousness.

One final thought here…

Average people think MONEY is the root of all evil. Rich people believe POVERTY is the root of all evil.

#6 Successful Entrepreneurs focus on the opportunities

A successful entrepreneur is always on the look out for new profitable opportunities that fit in with their personal objectives and long term vision.

The average entrepreneur on the other hand is more likely to focus on the obstacles, what can go wrong and the risk.

The successful entrepreneur is comfortable with calculated risk!

#7 Every no is one closer to a yes

Long before I even knew what an entrepreneur was, I worked as a direct sales person. (commission only).

This involved knocking on a lot of doors – and I experienced a lot of rejection.

To start with, hearing NO got me down.

But I was fortunate in having a sales manager who helped me reinterpret NO in a more positive way.

He would say:

“Barry, every NO means you’re one closer to the YES.”

Maybe I was a little more ‘innocent’ than the average person – but that made sense to me!

(We even worked back from my commissions what each No was worth! A massive $4 a rejection – and that was back in 1982!)

As you can imagine, when I started to interpret every No and slammed door as being worth $4, I felt entirely different about the process!

Now, of course, you should not go off and fail and fail and fail indefinitely. If something is not working, you should determine why and one great way to do that is to hire a Mentor (like my sales manager) or join a Mastermind Group.

The greatest entrepreneurs have heard the most no’s! Have failed the most!

Remember, as Zig Ziglar said:

“Each failure brings you one step closer to success.”

#8 This is NOT how the story is going to END

Every entrepreneur has challenges to overcome – and the most successful entrepreneurs often have had the most challenges to overcome.

They don’t dwell on the bad times – they know the final outcome is in their hands.

Remember:

“At any given moment, you have the power to say that this is NOT how the story is going to END”

#9 Successful entrepreneurs are not afraid of failure.

A relatively new term in entrepreneurial jargon is the term “fail forward.”

I’m not sure if everybody understands it. You see, many of us feel that we succeed forward.

But it doesn’t work that way. We fail forward.

Again, ask yourselves the questions every time you fail, “What’s good about this? What have I learned? How can I reinterpret this in a positive way?”

When I ask people, What is they are fearful of?

I get replies like: “Well, I’m afraid I’ll look like a fool” or “I’m afraid that people will realize I’m not as successful as I thought I was, or I pretend to be, or whatever.”

I like to talk about what I call the worst case scenario.

What’s good about failure?

Say that to most people and they will say nothing!

But again it is a matter of interpretation.

How about turning it around and saying instead:

‘You have just learned something that doesn’t work” or “How not to do something’

Can you see that that’s a better way of interpreting failure than just saying:

“I failed! It’s the end of the world!”

My friend Craig Ballantyne signed of an email recently saying:

Be prepared to stumble.

He went on to say:

“Fail forward. Learn your lessons. Move on. Never stop. Keep growing. Act in the face of fear and build extreme self-confidence. Bring the Energy & Enthusiasm. Celebrate each victory and build on your momentum.”

These are the qualities of every successful entrepreneur!

#10 An successful entrepreneur knows there is no such thing as luck.

I’ve always worked very, very hard, and the harder I worked, the luckier I got. – Alan Bond

#11 Laugh, even on your darkest days!

There will be challenging days, but in the end how you handle those challenges determines your eventual success.

Count your blessings every day. There is always something to be happy about if you ask yourself the correct questions.

I’m a big fan of Rudyard Kipling’s Poem: If

These lines in particular I have always felt related well to entrepreneurs….

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same…

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it…

#12 Successful entrepreneurs do not moan, bitch or complain!

A successful entrepreneur know that they have the power to create the life of their dreams.

They know that the outcome is always down to them – they are responsible for their business, wealth, relationships and health.

Successful entrepreneurs do not moan, bitch or complain!

#13 Successful entrepreneurs know that time is more important than money

A successful entrepreneur never trades time for money.

successful entrepreneurs know that time is more important than money.

#14 The best entrepreneurs are great listeners

Remember we have two ears and one mouth, use them proportionally.

The more you listen, they more you discover.

I remember as a young sales person being told that telling is not selling and if I wanted to succeed in selling I needed to ask questions.

When you ask questions, you have to listen.

More importantly the other party (buyer) feels they are part of the process. They are buying, rather than being sold!

Great entrepreneurs use smart questioning to build their businesses.

#15 Truth Matters!

Successful entrepreneurs don’t fool (BS) themselves. When business is good they celebrate and see how it can be even better, but when they have challenges, they are honest about it, they don’t pretend.

They are positive realists who understand risk and appreciate that whatever their financial position, they are in control of it.

“Truth shakes out when ideas and perspectives are banged against each other” – Jeff Bezos

Truth really matters – beware of Fake Gurus.

#16 Successful Entrepreneurs have Great Vision

Successful entrepreneurs never stop aspiring to even greater success.

They know that what you focus on is what you get!

A strong desire to achieve something great is the secret sauce of all great entrepreneurs.

As Real Estate Entrepreneur and Bestselling Author Frank McKinney puts it:

“Motivation washes off and goes down the drain with the soap at night, inspiration lasts about as long as a bad sunburn, but aspiration can alter your DNA and forever change your life, and in turn, the lives of those you love.”

See yourself as the success you really are, driving the car you wish, taking the vacations you wish and living in the home you wish.

#17 Stay Away From Negative People – They Have A Problem For Every Solution

Stay Away From Negative People - They Have A Problem For Every Solution

A successful entrepreneur knows that – Impossible is not a fact, it’s an opinion.

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Muhammad Ali

#18 Successful Entrepreneurs have no tolerance for drama and fake people

Top entrepreneurs are very selective in their friendships and relationships.

Social Media can give the impression that the modern entrepreneur is a very social being – and often they are. But anyone ever involved in a Start Up will tell you that the life of an entrepreneur is lonely. Long hours, ‘worry’ and pressure are common and we all handle that differently.

One thing for sure, is you have to be selective in your friends and the ‘distractions’ you allow. Reaching your goals take grit and determination and you really don’t want anyone in your life who distracts you or adds to that pressure!

Some of the most successful entrepreneurs are actually quite anti-social. They recognize they have no time to waste. They have no time for gossip.

Sometimes those who don’t socialize much aren’t actually anti-social, they just have no tolerance for drama and fake people

Sometimes those who don't socialize much aren't actually anti-social, they just have no tolerance for drama and fake people

#19 It is not what happens that matters…

“Man is Affected not by events, but by the view he takes of them” – Epictetus

"Man is Affected not by events, but by the view he takes of them" - Epictetus

#20 Contribution is your legacy

Successful entrepreneurs are driven by contribution. Sure, they may have been motivated by making money and success but ultimately it is the difference that we make in the lives of others and society that gives us our greatest satisfaction.

And I am not just talking about how entrepreneurs stimulate the economy, in terms of employment, investment and contribution to the GDP.

True entrepreneurs are driven to serve as much as they are called to lead

#21 Successful Entrepreneurs believe in Self-education

Formal education will make you a living. Self-education will make you a fortune. Jim Rohn

Personally, I’m a great believer in things such as masterminds and groups of people collaborating together and sharing what they know. Mastermind Groups are a great way to create deep and lasting connections with some incredible people and today some of my closest friendships started in a Mastermind Group.

Masterminds are about sharing what is working – but also they can on occasion be about sharing about what is not working!

Don’t make friends who are comfortable to be with. Make friends who will force you to lever yourself up

Thomas J. Watson

Seek out others that challenge your thinking. The reality is that many times the greatest support and inspiration for an entrepreneur does not come from family or friends, but rather from fellow entrepreneurs – especially the ones who practice: Tough Love!

Successful people are always learning, while poor people feel they have learned enough already.

# Remember it is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver

The capacity to recover and heal is natures greatest gift. I have not always made the best decisions with regards to my health and fitness (That breakthrough is a more recent event) but the amazing thing is that despite on occasion treating my body very badly it has always fought back and I have recovered – from deaths door on at least one occasion.

Now of course we should treat our bodies better, watch what we eat and exercise regularly. As Mahatma Gandhi said:

“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”

# It is human nature to be kind, helpful and generous

OK, some will not agree – but it is my experience that it is human nature to be helpful and generous and that includes your customers and even your competitors.

It is amazing how helpful people will be if you give them a chance. Even unhappy customers whom you may have let down will help you and work with you if you give them a chance.

Always approach conflict positively and with a kind heart. It makes a difference.

When I think about my Perfect Day I am reminded of this quote by Paulo Coelho…

perfect day formula

How would you define your Perfect Day?

What would you do, who would you do it with and how would you feel?

Ask most people these questions and you will get replies like…

… a feeling of accomplishment, a big business deal closed, a promotion at work, time with good friends, family time and that mystical feeling of being in “the zone”.

But how do you balance closing a business deal with spending quality time with loved ones or getting a work promotion with family time?

Building Blocks For A Perfect Day

Solid foundations are essential…

=>> Create a Not-To-Do List!

Quite simply – a list of things you do not do under any circumstances!

I am not here to make any moral judgement on what a Not To Do list may include – but for example it could include at one end deciding to never do your own laundry while at the other end it could be to never discuss politics or to never use profanities. We are all different and what may be on my not-to-do list may well not be on yours and vice versa.

=>> Create your own set of Life Rules

Now most of us have admirable beliefs and values and hold ourselves up to high standards – but not so many of us write them down. I was inspired to more carefully define my own set of Life Rules by fellow IncomeDiary contributor – Craig Ballantyne

As an example I repeat below one of Craig’s life rules (which is also something for the Not-To-Do list) below…

I do not engage in confrontations with anyone, in-person or online. This is a waste of time and energy. If I have caused harm, I apologize and fix the situation. And then I take a deep breath, relax, breathe out, and re-focus my efforts back on my work and goals

Why are these so important?

Quite simple really – with a Not To Do list and your own personal set of Life Rules you are less likely to come across conflict situations and anything that gets in the way of having a perfect day.

Also, life is a lot simpler once you start adhering to your own personal philosophies – and stop worrying about what others think. You spend less time ‘thinking’ and agonizing over a response because you and your closest friends know your position on the important things in life!

=>>Develop A Positive Morning Ritual!

Each persons ritual may be slightly different but the important thing is to develop a ritual that empowers you and sets you up for the day.

Examples…

a) Give yourself at least 15 minutes of no screen time.
(Do not check email or Social Media)
b) Swap the coffee for a glass of water, or a herbal tea.
c) Stretch. (Good time for morning Yoga or Tai Chi)
d) Open up your daily motivational readings.
(read some of your favorite, inspiring quotes)
e) Review your goals and life purpose
f) Meditate / Pray / Give Thanks.

I honor the fact that some of us are religious, some of us are semi-religious and some of us are not religious at all. The point here, is to incorporate something that allows you to focus and start your day with energy!

=>>Make Exercise Part Of Morning Ritual!

Now, I am not one of those people who could be described as an Athlete – but one thing I have always enjoyed is a brisk morning walk. The thing about exercise (walking, running, cardio or strength training) is that it gives us a wonderful feeling of well-being. In my case, I found walking – often on my own, by the Beach in West Sussex, was the time when I had some of my best ideas. Actually, I would go further and say that I rarely if ever had my best ideas in the office!

So stop wasting your life in bed, start getting up early to exercise and experience the many benefits of morning exercise.

make you day a Perfect day

7 Key Actions For A Perfect Day

1) Reflect and Journal – the night before.

Before you go to bed create a routine that allows you to think about your day.

What did you learn today? (from your mistakes)

Mistakes are meant for learning – not repeating.

What will you not do in future?

What are you grateful for? How did you progress towards your goals?

I recommend you answer these questions via a written word brain dump (Journal). Write down how you feel about your day, what you learned etc and then take it one step further by pulling out the key points and structuring your upcoming day accordingly.

2) For a Perfect Day – Plan your day ahead – the night before.

Most us have heard of a TTD List (Things To Do List) – and for many years I have diligently sat down each evening and set out my TTD list for the following day. It is a good policy – but if you want to step it up a gear, PRIORITIZE! Far better to have three important life changing priorities that you must accomplish rather than a long list of relatively average things that frankly will not make a lot of difference on way or the other.

Many TTD lists are far too general and lack prioritization, covering everything from picking up the laundry to launching a new business.

By all means have a list for the household chores but the TTD list I am referring to here is the one that reflects your life goals and ambitions.

When you do tomorrows TTD list tonight – ask yourself this critical question…

What is my No 1 Priority Right Now? and No 2 and No 3. I would suggest that those priorities would rarely be collecting the laundry!

3) Wake up 15 minutes earlier than usual and focus on solving your #1 problem in life.

Wow – this is super powerful.

Apply this immediately and you will start to experience a more productive and perfect day, everyday!

Honestly it is that ‘simple’ – try it

4) Maximize your magic time

Know when you are most productive and dedicate that time to your #1 project.

Most people have a period of time during the day that they are most productive. First try to identify that time then attempt to position yourself so you’re completing your essential task during this time. For me personally, my productivity decreases as the day goes on. Therefore, after my morning routine I immediately try to complete the most essential action of the day as soon as possible.

I know that the longer I wait to complete my essential task the harder it will be to focus and the slower I will work. In turn I become frustrated with my inefficiency. Avoid this by completing that key action during your optimum productivity period.

5) Batch your work … have a time to do emails, calls, and focused work. Don’t multi-task.

Remember:“The man who chases two rabbits, catches none”

Confession time – Multi-tasking used to be something I almost prided myself in. Ever heard the term: BUSY FOOL? That used to be me!

If you need to send emails and reach out to people, devote an hour to doing this exclusively. If you’re creating a course that you’ll eventually sell and you need to create videos, break it down into workable batches (filming, editing, etc.). Doing so allows you to take the same actions over and over again for a short period of time. This helps to get into a rhythm and can often lead to the feeling commonly described as “in the zone”.

Did you notice that term “focused work” above – the fact is that many of us handle our emails, make the phone calls and post on social media before we do our FOCUSED WORK. But really it should be the other way round!

It is the focused work that gets us to our goals and it is the focused work that pays the bills!

6) Always Be proactive – follow your plan

If you are following the strategies above it is almost impossible to not be proactive and following your plan.

Simply doing the above, creates FOCUS and what you focus on is what you get!

7) Stop living in the past – Live in the NOW!

“Living in the past means I’m living in regret. Living in the future means I’m living in anxiety. Learning from the past means I’m becoming wiser. Being excited for the future means I’m doing what I need to do now to make that exciting future happen” ~ Matt Hearnden

Living a Perfect Day – Expanded

Creating and scripting your own Perfect Day is well worth the investment in terms of time and energy. Actually I would go further – you cannot afford not to do it!

These 7 key actions and the earlier foundations are starting blocks only – there is more to do and learn. That is why I enthusiastically recommend Craig Ballantynes Perfect Day Formula to all my friends and colleagues. It has made such a huge difference to how I live my life and manage my day. My hope is it will do the same for you.

Before getting to know Craig, the truth is that many of my days were far from perfect. Fortunately implementing the Perfect Day Formula and having Craig as a mentor has changed that!

The Perfect Day Formula is about multiplying your productivity, having more fun, making more money and enjoying more freedom into your life…

Buy Perfect Day Formula

I am honored that Craig used my review of The Perfect Day Formula on his website and I cannot do better than repeat it below…

“For a long time I confused hard work with discipline. And even though I was a very hard worker in business, I was not disciplined in many other areas of my life, including my health and relationships. I allowed too many toxic people into my life simply because I did not have a clearly defined set of life rules and I lacked a NOT to-do list. Being hardworking in your career does not mean you are disciplined. Success in business is ultimately of no use if the rest of your life is out of balance. This was the #1 lesson Craig taught me through his Perfect Day Formula and personal mentoring. The inside look that Craig gives us into Warren Buffett’s success helped me appreciate the power of Morning Rituals and create my own. I get up earlier every day and have made time for what matters. Craig’s formula has refocused my desire to leave the world a better place for having been here, and I only wish I had been given this information when I was much younger. If I had implemented Craig’s Perfect Day Formula earlier it would have saved me a lot of heartache and money. It is essential for anyone who wants balance in their life.”

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.

Let me start by asking you a very important question – Are you creating the life of your dreams or are you just reacting to it?

This question gets to the heart of whether you are living by design – meaning you are the creator of your life. Or, whether you are living your life by default, just reacting to what life throws at you.

In this post we will review both options – which would you rather choose?

Living By Default – The Default Loop

The best way to explain what I mean by ‘default’ is to use a computer analogy. A default setting is a setting that’s been preset by the manufacturer. Unless we deliberately change the settings to customise them to our own preference, they will stay on default.

It’s easy to understand a default setting in computer terms but what about how it relates to your life? Whereas we consciously change settings on our computers or our mobile phones, in life we unconsciously choose a Default Setting; a setting that is made up of old beliefs, thoughts and feelings. As soon as life pushes a certain button we automatically return to these well-worn neural ‘default’ pathways, believing them to be the truth. But Default Settings are far from the truth.

As you grow in awareness you’ll begin to realise that your Default Settings are where you go when you are unconscious – when something scares you or triggers something and when you lose your present moment awareness.

Most people don’t realise how Default Settings affect their lives. We all know people who seem to experience the same set of challenges again and again. They experience the same negative life events over and over again and they don’t even recognise it’s a problem!

Over the last twenty years I’ve coached a lot of people and I see the same reasons why they are not achieving what they want from life over and over again. It doesn’t matter if I’m talking to a multi millionaire or school drop out. Everyone is challenged and talks about the same issues.

I call these issues Default Settings and there are primarily six of them. These Default Settings are what sit behind a life lived on autopilot and each one, when chosen takes us into an unconscious default loop.

If you’re fed up with the current set of life circumstances you find yourself in, I’ll bet some of my hard earned cash you’ve fallen foul to one, or more, of the Default Settings.

As you read on, ask yourself, which one(s) are my Default Settings?

The Six Default Settings are: Approval, Blame, Conformity, Doubts and Fears, Excuses and Focus Splatter

Living Live By Default!

These six Default Settings’ are the biggest blocks we have to getting what we want out of life. Each one is a story we can hide behind and one we can use to save face when we explain to others our lack of results.

Lets explore each Default Setting in more detail to gain a better understanding of each one:

Default Setting #1 – Approval

The Approval Default Setting causes us to go against what we truly believe in. The excessive need for approval leads us to make decisions to please the people whose approval we seek at the cost of what’s “right” for us. This Default Setting believes that others are responsible for our worth. If they like us, we’re okay, and if they don’t like us, we are not!

People who struggle with this issue usually wait for approval of others for recognition of their achievements, run a mile in the face of conflict, are over-agreeable in their relationships, say yes to more things than they should, live their lives according to expectations of them, often have a hard time solving problems or making decisions on their own, don’t speak up and often rely on others for their happiness.

If you are waiting for approval from others for you to live the life you love, then you’re living by default!

Default Setting #2 – Blame

The Blame Default Setting makes us a victim in life. Instead of taking responsibility for what happens to us we blame the outside world. “It’s not our fault,” we say, “It’s (fill in the blank!)”. This Default Setting is about taking the easy way out and blaming anything for a life that’s below where it should be.

Playing the blame game is closely linked with the need for drama. You know, phrases such as, “You’ll never believe what’s just happened to me!” or “Can you believe what he/she did to me!” Some people create drama in their own life, while others get caught up in the drama of friends and family, or the world in general.

If you’re default is to point the finger, constantly complain or attract drama into you life, then you’re living by default!

Default Setting #3 – Conformity

The Conformity Default Setting has us unconsciously chasing other people’s or society’s definitions of success. This Default Setting has us spend our waking hours working hard to fit into cookie cutter patterns of success dished up by the media. They do a great job of telling us what success is and what it is not! So we constantly spend our time and money rearranging our external world in an attempt to get the “perfect” picture. Then, and only then, we will be happy!

What’s your definition of success? If you can’t answer this clearly, you’re living by default!

Default Setting #4 – Doubts and Fears

The Doubt and Fear Default Setting causes us to play the safe game. Here’s a truism – any action that’s worthwhile and causes you to grow will likely scare you to death! There is probably not a day that goes by where you don’t wish for a better life for yourself. But then you drop into the default loop, doubt your ability and get stuck. Fear and doubt want us the play small, to shrink, to run away instead of following our heart.

There are a hundred and one fears. Do you recognise any of these? Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of the unknown, fear loosing something (like your money or your job), fear of looking like an idiot., fear of death.

If you are allowing fear or doubt to hold you back, you’re living by default!

Default Setting #5 – Excuses

This Excuses Default Setting shows up in the form of excuses and justifications. Excuses are nothing more than avoidance tactics, a coping strategy we use to explain away our lack of results and inability to overcome fear.

There is always a reason someone didn’t get the promotion, or why they can’t get to the gym, lose the weight or have enough money. The list goes on! Excuses make us delusional. We believe we would be able to get the result we want “if only….” If only this, that or the other happened.

If you are letting excuses stop you from taking action, you’re living by default!

Default Setting #6 – Focus Splatter

The Focus Splatter Default Setting unconsciously pulls us to dabble in lots of things but never really commit to anything. It’s when we mindlessly and half-heartedly splatter our focus on non-result producing activities, so we never fully engage in life. Focus splatter is like the magpie, always looking out for bright shiny objects to bring back to its nest. Each bright shiny object that comes our way gets our focus just until the next one comes along. There are many ‘focus splatter’ culprits. Here are some you may recognise – Facebook, Youtube, Google, TV, latest fads, new business ideas, email, and clutter.

If you’re focus is spent too much on non-result activities, you’re living by default!

If you are waiting for approval from others for you to live the life you love, then you’re living by default!

The Past Becomes The Future

Please make no mistake, these Default Settings come with a heavy price. Each one of these six Default Settings will make you feel better in the short term. But the lack of conscious and deliberate action towards the life you want will create an inner void of regret as you watch your life slip through your fingers.

These Default Settings strip us of any notion of personal responsibility, they dilute our life force energy; we start to believe that we have no control over anything, that it’s all about what happens out there and since out there is out of our control, our life becomes an emotional roller coaster ride with more lows than highs!

We keep repeating the same patterns, knowing we want something better but unable to do anything about it. It’s not long-before it leads us on the dangerous road to boredom, apathy, and despair and, at its worst, depression.

The Power Of Choice

But, and it’s a big but, today and everyday you have a choice. That’s the choice to live your life by default or to live your life by design. Sure, external circumstances might have dealt you a bad hand but you have the choice of whether you succumb to the default loop or rise above it into the design loop.

Living Life By Design – The Design Loop

When you choose to live by design you focus on what you desire or want. Which then brings about the life you choose to live – the Life of Your Dreams! And, like everything else in life, this is something that most of us are going to have to learn to do.

Design Your Life

If your fed up with living a life that feels out of control and you are ready to make conscious decisions about the type of future you would like to create, here is a step-by-step process that allows you to meet all your responsibilities whilst you creating the life you love.

It’s the same process I use with my personal coaching clients to support them in making changes toward living a high quality life.

You can use it to improve every area of your life – whether that’s obtaining more money, love, health, and a successful business.

Create The Life Of Your Dreams In 6 Easy Steps

Step #1. Clarity:

Living a life by design starts with knowing what that is. Everything flows from the vision of your right and ideal private and professional life. Knowing what kind of life you want to create gives you unstoppable power. Clarity is key in the quest for life of your dreams.

Step #2. Eliminate:

Once you have a clear vision, you need to eliminate anything that is not in alignment with it. That means clearing out junk, clutter and energy drains to free up room and let your new vision in. This important step is often missed out in many “quick fix” books and training programmes. It’s very hard to stay focused on creating a new vision when your life is set up in a reactive way.

Step #3. Intention:

Intention

What you intend is what your life becomes because thoughts become things. Your intention is a specific statement of clarity containing what you want, why you want it, and when you want it by.

Step #4. Attention:

The habit of attention is a daily practice. This step is your most powerful creative tool in your tool kit. Remember, where focus goes energy flows. Therefore, it is important to build daily rituals, practices and habits into your life since these will help you to stay focus only on what you want – your intention.

Step #5. Action:

This step is not just about taking any kind of action – it’s about taking conscious action (not default actions). Taking action is about moving forward with your intentions – taking actions not reactions. Reaction is NOT action!

Step #6. Release:

Lastly it’s about letting go of your expectations of ‘how’ your intention and vision will manifest by ‘unsetting’ your head. This allows your heart to stay open and see the opportunities in everything you create in your life.

These are the six steps of deep blasting transformation – to creating the life of your dreams. Real success comes from the setting of new habits, disciplines and rituals – it’s the opposite of the “quick fix” which leaves so many people frustrated, disillusioned and cynical.

Below is a short case study of Steve and Lynda showing how they put each step into practice to achieve one of their big life goals. I’ve bracketed each of the six steps to make it easier to spot.

Steve & Lynda’s Story:

Two years ago Steve and Lynda sat down to seriously re-think their lives. A couple in their fifties, they sensed it was time to move to a new chapter in their life. Lynda wanted to bail out of her corporate PR job and make a living out of her passion for floristry. Steve wanted to spend more time on his beloved yacht, moored in the stunning Bala Lake in North Wales, whilst maintaining his business interests.

They started by creating a vision board, which contained images and sentences describing the life they aimed to create in the next three years (clarity). After careful consideration, they decided to scale back their lifestyle, sell their family home in North London and purchase a smaller two bedroom house close to Bala Lake in Gwynedd, Wales

This intended move required them to simplify their life and de-clutter (eliminate) a lot of ‘stuff’ they had collected over the years. Sorting everything out to fit the space they were planning to move into felt to Lynda both overwhelming and liberating. She couldn’t believe how much ‘stuff’ they owned!

Lynda and Steve set a specific goal (intention) to simply their life, find a property and move to Wales within the year. They were very clear on the type of home they wanted, including its appearance, the number of rooms and the size of the land surrounding the house. One of the requirements was for Lynda to have a little studio on the premises.

Due to the tough economic climate, selling the house in North London took a lot longer than expected and ultimately the sale price was not as much as Lynda and Steve would have liked. This was a disappointment and the couple had to find a way to make their new budget work. But, throughout all this time, they never lost sight of what they wanted to create for themselves (attention).

After a few months and lots of travelling back and forth from Wales looking at many different properties (action), they made an offer on a house. It was half a mile from the lake and met all the criteria they had set for their perfect home. No sooner had they popped the Champagne bottle open in celebration, than the real estate agent called to say the seller had accepted another offer. Another huge disappointment.

After discussing the loss of their dream home, they decided to let go, relax and trust that the right home was out there and would come to them (release). A week later their real estate agent called again. Another home had just become available. It was so new that the agent didn’t have any details; however Lynda and Steve decided to look at it the next day. The house was not only perfect, it was at walking distance from the lake and had an outbuilding that could be converted into a studio for Lynda. They made an offer there and then and it was accepted.

Twenty months after creating their vision board, Lynda and Steve moved to Wales to start their new life.

The moral of this story is that you can create a life by design and live the life you love – just follow these the six steps.

I’m not suggesting it’s easy, but it’s very rewarding, and that is the goal and that’s why I’ve written this blog post. I believe you deserve it. The bigger and more important question is, do you?

Are you ready to live the Life of Your Dreams?

If you are one of those individuals who are fed up with suffering today, struggling today, tackling challenge after challenge and feeling a victim of everything… then do yourself a favour, hit your reset button and start living your life by design.

Success Online – Creating a Captivating Hook and Irresistible Offer For Your Business

Success Online – the Politically Incorrect TRUTH!

Back in November we had the world’s best email marketer speak at our Info Workshop seminar.

His name is Tyler “Moneyfingers” Bramlett, and boy-oh-boy, did he ever deliver the politically incorrect TRUTH.

Here’s the biggest lesson he shared:

“People Drastically Over-Estimate What They Can Do In One Year Online AND Drastically Under-Estimate What They Can Do In 5 Years!”

Some background…

Tyler joined our Mastermind group three years ago.

In his words, he knew nothing about marketing, but he followed our advice, took massive action, made a lot of mistakes, and discovered one fundamental truth about success online…

…You must learn to create a captivating hook and irresistible offer if you want to be successful at selling.

“If you master the ability to create a captivating hook and irresistible offer,” Tyler said, “Then you will make a LOT of money.”

Tyler’s Rules for a Captivating Hook…

#1 – It Must Be SEXY

#2 – It Must Provoke MASSIVE Curiosity

It must have a strong promise, a quick-&-easy easy solution, and a unique angle.

#3 – It Must Be Congruent With The Bait

Outrageous Example:

success online secrets

This Sentence Provokes Curiosity, Fixes The Target Paid (Women over 40), Quickly and Easily and Puts Product in a Category of One

Use This 7 Question Formula To Determine If Your Hook Is Viable…

1. Who Is Your Target Demographic And What Pain Do They Have??
2. In One Sentence What Is The Big Promise Of Your Offer??
3. Does This Sentence Provoke Curiosity For Your Demographic??
4. Does This Sentence Fix Their Pain??
5. Does This Sentence Fix Their Pain Quickly?
6. Does This Sentence Fix Their Pain Easily?
7. Have You Ever Seen Anyone Else Use This Same Sentence?

Tyler’s Rules for Your Offer

#1 – Your Offer Must Be an Extension of the Hook

#2 – Your Offer Must Appeal to Emotion

Rather Than Focusing On What Your Product Includes, Focus On…

-> What It Will Do For Them
-> Why It Will Work When Everything Else Has Failed
-> Why They Shouldn’t Blame Themselves (They Never Knew This Info)

#3 – Your Offer Must Be Unique

Use This 7 Question Formula To Determine If Your Offer Is Irresistible

1. How Can You Present Your Core Offer An Extension Of Your Hook??
2. How Can You Make It Seem As Though It Wasn’t Your Idea To Create The Offer But Rather Your Duty?
3. How Can You Position The Value To Be 20Xs + More Than Your Price?
4. How Can You Do The “Ron Popeil Price Drop” In Such A Way That “Outside Circumstances” Are Allowing You To Further Discount The Price?
5. How Can You Add Value By Offering “3X Bonuses” That Help People Get Results Faster Or Easier?
6. How Can You Make Your Guarantee Unique And Personal?
7. How Can You Convince Your Customer That You Are THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD With This Solution?

That’s 7-Figure Stuff right there. Thanks Tyler!

At our event, Tyler showed the audience how in the past 6 weeks he had made over $423,731. But Tyler didn’t succeed overnight. He struggled for his first year, just like I did, and just like Bedros Keuilian did. The key to success is…

…fighting through the initial struggles knowing that in 3-5 years from now you will add a ZERO to your revenues.

“The reality is most people underestimate the amount of work they need to do in their first year,” Bedros said in a big sermon to the group, “But those same people set 5-year goals too low. But work and experience operate like compounding interest.”

Success Online - The reality is most people underestimate the amount of work they need to do in their first year

Real Success Online

“You make the least amount of interest back in the first year when you put money into an investment fund, but if you keep putting the same amount of money in each year and keep that interest rolling back in year after year, the power of compounding interest grows your wealth exponentially faster in year four, five and six.”

“The same principle applies to the knowledge you build in business. When you work your tail off the first year, you’ll find that future business ventures bring faster and easier success than with your first.”

“That’s the learning curve… or what I call the compounding knowledge effect. The harder you work in your first year in business, the faster and easier success comes in the future years. Don’t underestimate where you can be in a few years if you keep working hard and following your mentor’s advice today.”

Bedros is right.

Empires are built on strong foundations.

To build a strong foundation, you have to do the work.

Don’t let a few initial struggles derail you from your big goals and dreams. Just realize that the initial inertia takes a little extra effort to get over, but when you do, you’ll build momentum, and things get easier, and success comes faster.

Right now seems like a good place to “tell you to imagine where you could be in a few years”, but as Bedros and Tyler said, you’d underestimate it. You’d sell yourself short.

So just do this. Commit to doing the work and experience real Success Online.

Make the New Year a year of study, action, commitment, and a “Never Give Up” attitude.

Put in the place a strong foundation, make the investment in your future, and realize that the payoff is right around the corner.

We believe in you.

The most common problems for entrepreneurs are often not even “work” related…

In many instances it has something to do with excessive sitting and poor diet.

Working long, unsociable hours, on little sleep, fueling your body with crap food – just to get back to the grind isn’t healthy for you or your business.

New research shows sedentary behavior to be equivalent to smoking… It’s no wonder some entrepreneurs are incredibly unhealthy despite an OK diet.

I recently stumbled upon a thread about an article I wrote in regard to entrepreneurs being unhealthy, and one of the replies helped me grasp something…

Many entrepreneurs, mostly those just getting their feet wet, are under the impression health is a necessary sacrifice now in order to live well later…

And they’re basing this on the notion;

“Entrepreneurs live like most won’t now in order to live like most can’t later.”

Working harder at working smarter is one thing, but that has nothing to do with sacrificing your health. It’s important to understand the body wants every internal process to function in harmony.

When this happens, our energy, mental clarity and creative abilities operate at a much higher level.

As I mentioned in “Why Entrepreneurs Are Unhealthy & What To Do About It”, studies are showing successful entrepreneurs are healthier than most people.

They tend to eat more fruits and vegetables, exercise more, and take more self-responsibility.

Here’s what else they stick to…

20 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Immediately Improve Their Health

#1 Spend One Hour Outside Daily

Thomas Jefferson spent most of his waking hours at home working, but never failed to spend at least one hour outside per day.

Force yourself to go outside and get some fresh air, vitamin D and exercise. Just walk around the block a few times if you’re unable to venture to far from the computer.

#2 Improve What You Eat

Farmers Market

In order to become the healthiest and strongest version of yourself, it’s ideal to eat nutritionally balanced meals with all natural, unprocessed ingredients.

These meals should consist of local and organic whole foods, herbs and spices.

I use a cool resource called Local Harvest to find farmers’ markets, organic family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food in my area.

#3 Improve How You Eat

If you want to maintain healthy weight, high levels of energy and positive well being it’s critical to develop healthy eating habits!

I like to eat soon after waking up and stick to set eating times (ex: 9, 12, 5 & 8) throughout the day.

Also, thoroughly chewing your food and not drinking during and for up to an hour after a meal noticeably aids digestion.

#4 Improve Your Posture

Acknowledge how you’re sitting this very second.

Are both of your feet planted on the ground? Is your chest up and shoulders back?

When you correct your posture, you allow your spine to rise and your chest to open, which eases tension and helps the breath flow more freely. The oxygen can now penetrate more deeply into your lungs.

As you begin to take these deeper breathes you activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is lowering your stress hormone levels, healing your brain, and stimulating recovery and digestion.

#5 Open A Window

The quality of our air has a huge impact on our health.

As entrepreneurs, most of us spend quite a bit of time indoors in front of the computer.

New research shows that more than 99% of the bugs living inside us aren’t harmful, in fact, they’re beneficial; assisting our digestion, metabolism, and immunity.

Interestingly, one of the easiest ways to build your microbiome (the bugs living inside you), is simply opening a window.

But there’s even a tasty way to do it… with Kombucha of course.

#6 Stick To A Sleep Schedule

Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day forces your your body’s “internal clock” to expect sleep at a certain time each night.

Go to bed and get at least 8 but no more than 9 hours of sleep and wake up at the same time every day (for me it’s typically 11pm – 8am).

I’ll typically dim the lights an hour before bed and sleep in complete darkness which helps me fall asleep and stay asleep.

If you’re on the computer in the evening, I recommend installing the f.lux app as you’re probably affecting the quality of your sleep.

#7 Start Your Day With A Walk

Make it a priority to go for a morning walk before you start working. This primes you for the day, helps you sleep and lowers your stress levels.

Some of my best ideas have occurred on my morning walks.

#8 Take A Break and Move Around

Sitting for long periods of time is linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and excess body fat.

Walking and exercise in general releases endorphins, which quickly creates feelings of happiness and euphoria.

Instead of just flying from one task to the next, walk around the park or at least stretch in between to-do list items. Simple stretching, lunges or even walking up and down the stairs a couple times is a great way to recharge and refocus.

#9 Take Weekend Vacations

Reserve weekends for yourself.

Even though you work for yourself, and don’t have a morning commute, weekend rest should still be a priority. But this doesn’t necessarily mean lounging all day.

Take short mini-vacations. Get in your car and drive a couple of hours to the beach or forest.

Even if you feel you didn’t get enough work done during the week, and want to make up for it on the weekend, enjoy the fresh air and refocus while away from the computer.

#10 Take Walking Meetings

walking-meeting

As entrepreneurs, we’re constantly networking and meeting new business contacts. Next time, suggest a walking meeting instead of a sit-down.

I love to meet people and walk around a park. This has helped me settle negotiations and left lasting impressions on some great people I now call friends.

It’s also a great excuse to get outside and get the blood flowing a bit.

You might find some who think you’re a nut, but I’ve found most professionals appreciate this refreshing approach to meetings.

#11 Don’t Eat Lunch At Your Desk

Lunch is a great opportunity to recharge, network and even stretch the legs.

You’re definitely busy, but you’re not so busy that you have to eat at your desk. Make it a point to take a lunch break.

Many of us aren’t great at multitasking so working through lunch basically makes both tasks less productive. Not too mention your keyboard is probably dirtier than your toilet.

#12 Drink More Water

Make water your primary beverage – it’s far and beyond the superior choice for entrepreneurs.

A 2% decrease in water saturation in your body will noticeably slow your thought process and ability to remember. If you need flavor, try adding fresh fruit and/or citrus to make it more appealing.

#13 Get A Massage

Massage therapy has been used for hundreds of years as alternative medicine and a way to promote health and well-being.

A weekly deep tissue massage helps me maintain relaxation, sleep better and keeps my muscles healthy and flexible.

#14 Limit “Time-suckers”

Set email answering and social media updates to certain times. You can get bogged down answering emails or checking out stories on Facebook.

Aside from allowing your audience to expect content at a certain time, you’re able to get on and do what you have to without being sucked into a juicy controversy or losing sleep over some new conspiracy you saw in your newsfeed…

Limiting time-suckers will allow you to get more done, which frees up time to exercise, socialize or simply relax.

#15 Do Light Exercise Around The House

There’s really a point of diminishing returns when you’re working all the time.

Your brain gets locked down to one way of thinking, and you’re simply not as productive as you’d be if you’re blood was flowing and you were engaging your entire body.

Take short, frequent breaks and utilize them to exercise throughout your day.

20 minutes of extended exercise or an hour of walking per day is great. But it’s even better to get up frequently from your desk and move around even if it’s only for 10 minutes.

Again, the whole 33 minutes on with 10 minutes off, seriously works wonders.

#16 Hire A Virtual Assistant

As entrepreneurs especially those of us just getting our feet wet with this whole “running my own business” thing, often end up doing much of the leg work ourselves.

This translates into working long 14-hour days, resulting in mental and physical exhaustion.

Outsourcing everything from office tasks to your social media presence can free up time to focus on health and the expansion and improvement of your business.

Here are 5 great resources to find reliable freelancers and virtual assistants to do just that:

AwesomeWeb.com

PeoplePerHour.com

IVAA.org

EasyOutsource.com

BestJobs.ph

#17 Challenge Yourself

Whenever you go out – to the store, the movies, or the mall – physically challenge yourself by parking farther away, taking the stairs and reaching with the opposite hand.

Each of these subtle actions results in stimulated muscles, increased blood-flow and calories burned.

#18 Find an Accountability Partner

A great way to stick to a workout program or healthy lifestyle is finding a partner.  Whether it’s someone to go to yoga class with or somebody to text “crushed my work out!”

Having an accountability partner will help you stay committed and allow you to see better results in return.

Check out these 64 awesome health and fitness apps by Greatist.

#19 Set A Work and Play Schedule

If you’re chained to your desk all day, think about incorporating hikes, tea, games, yoga et cetera into your regular breaks.

I’ve adopted a great method allowing me to remain productive yet active and grounded throughout my day.

Working in 33 minute and 33 second (33.33) intervals seems to be the magic productivity number for me.

After each session, I take advantage of a 10-15 minute break by conversing with strangers, walking around the park, practicing yoga, doing push-ups and meditating.

#20 Be More Social – In Real Life

Having a positive sense of community is nearly as important to our health as exercise because the division of work, feeling of association and togetherness all help establish a healthy atmosphere and mindset.

With no separation between work and home life, and no one to answer to, an Internet entrepreneur isn’t forced to keep his body moving, to keep his mind alert, to maintain his appearance, or to do anything that would be socially ideal.

Remember, the most successful entrepreneurs combine great health with great business!

Prosperity Conscious Principles That Work!

Prosperity Conscious Principles

This post is part of our MoneyLove series. In part #1, we talked about why you should love money. In this article, we’ll talk about how to get more of it. How to get Prosperity!

A Moneylove Approach to Playing Larger and Winning Bigger

Doing is being.
To have done’s not enough.
To stuff yourself with doing — that’s the game.
To name yourself each hour by what’s done,
To tabulate your time at sunset’s gun
And find yourself in acts
You could not know before the facts.

The above is just the first part of Ray Bradbury’s poem, Doing Is Being. Ray showed the poem to me before it was even published in the early 1980s, sitting under a tree among the rolling seaside hills at the Santa Barbara Writers’ Conference, where we were both members of the faculty, though he was one of the celebrity keynoters and I just taught some classes in nonfiction writing.

I loved the phrase, “To stuff yourself with doing.” As I have found true with so many creative geniuses, Ray had a grand generosity of spirit, and gave me permission to use the poem in my book, Psychological Immortality, even before his own poetry book containing it was released.

It struck such a deep chord in me because I always believed the best teaching came through developing experiential techniques. I pioneered a lot of these in workshops I led for the adventurous Association for Humanistic Psychology. I also taught them to other authors who were brilliant speakers or counselors, but didn’t think in experiential models. People like Louise Hay, Mark Victor Hansen, and Wayne Dyer.

This is why I think so many of my Moneylove ideas have stood the test of time, and new ones I am regularly creating still have impact in the world. Though I call the following list, 10 principles, they are really action-oriented strategies, all requiring that someone adopting any or all of them, do something or change something they are doing. It doesn’t even really matter if taking one of these specific action steps is the right or ideal one to explore. Just the taking action itself is shaking things up, transforming the equation, “to find yourself in acts you could not know before the facts.” To do, and therefore to be.

prosperity-350x248

1. Start Immediately

Nothing dissipates a great business idea like delay. The most promising prosperity-producing business plans can scatter like smoke through too much pondering and indecision, or talking about it. I am not suggesting that you have to start big, or do it all overnight. Rather, baby steps are often a good way to build the momentum to manifest your dream results. It’s important that you begin doing something that will serve your specific idea and start putting it into a physical form. This may indeed become a false start, so don’t expend too much energy on it initially, but create some kind of movement toward what you envision that idea becoming.

This is not a brand new idea. At the very beginning of Moneylove, I quote pioneering psychologist, William James, who said that to change one’s life you must “start immediately.” And even though some scholars dispute whether the famous “begin it now” quote originated with Goethe, it certainly predates James: “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

In a similar vein, one of my mentors and friends, Bob Schwartz, founder of the School for Entrepreneurs at Tarrytown, New York, used to say that a major factor in business success is what you do “when the rubber hits the road.” Even the most luxurious, high-powered car won’t get you anywhere with a burned-out starter.

2. The Law of Subtraction

This is simply to focus on being more discerning, more selective, more aware of what really matters. In other words, being more discriminating in your choices.
There is so much stuff pouring out in this era of instant access to just about everything, so much information bombarding us, we have to make a much more intentional, concentrated effort to pick out the truly valuable and worthwhile from all the clutter.

One of the best explanations of this came over a hundred years ago from Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, when he had Holmes explain to Watson his own particular take on what information to take in and what to leave out:

“The mind is like an attic, you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out.”

What a beautiful way of expressing the problem of information overload. Essayist Lance Morrow, also did a great dissertation on this subject, in Time magazine, saying:

“The mind takes its shape from what it holds, and therefore, Zen-like, sometimes grows more graceful because of what it has kept out.”

And so it is true, that it is often what you subtract that is as important or even more so than what you attract.
And this brings me to one of my favorite affirmations, which many people have used as a guideline to help decide what to let in and what to keep out:

“If it doesn’t bring me profit, pleasure, or knowledge, it isn’t worth doing.”

If you simply make a list, with headings for Profit, Pleasure, Knowledge, and put down all the things now happening in your life, all the things you are now paying attention to, and seeing where they fit in this trio of categories, you would begin to get more of a sense of what belongs in a successful, dynamic life and what doesn’t. How many of these things actually fulfill two or three of the criteria? Obviously, your life is more dynamic and creative and has more potential when more of the things you do give you profit, pleasure, and knowledge.

3. Your Ninety Day Trial Period – Prosperity

This is a take-action strategy that many coaching clients have credited with quick and powerful results in their creative and financial lives. In this whirlwind life many of us experience, with so many choices, so many ways we can be in the world and use our various skills and talents, it is essential to set certain boundaries, and this is an easy one that seems to work well for everyone who tries it.

Very simply, whenever you have more than one important choice–and this works in your professional life as well as your personal situation–you pick one of those choices and commit to giving it your all–your total focus, energy, and time for the next ninety days. In most such activities or projects, ninety days is enough time to know whether this was the right decision for you. If it still feels right after ninety days, you keep doing it. If you can see that it is not nearly producing the results you expected, let it go and move on to your next choice. If you are applying this to a creative activity, there’s a good chance that you might have wasted a year under the normal circumstances of deciding whether or not it works for you. With this strategy, you get to check out four projects or decisions in that same year.

4. More Than Their Money’s Worth

This is such a basic marketing concept that it often amazes me why people don’t adopt it as their personal credo. When I first started marketing myself as a speaker and workshop leader, and then started producing my prosperity audio program, I always had as my main foundational tone the idea of giving my audience, “More than their money’s worth.”

And here’s an important part of that–don’t tell them that is your intention until you deliver their first order and they can confirm you are indeed delivering something more valuable than the amount they are giving you. IncomeDiary.com is a great example of taking this even further. In chats with Internet entrepreneurs and bloggers, time and again, these online masters have almost awestruck regard for Michael Dunlop and what he has done by starting out giving huge amounts of valuable free information. It isn’t complicated, but it is brilliant. By building personal relationships with the best and brightest bloggers and online marketing masters and content providers, Michael has been able to give away what many other bloggers and entrepreneurs charge for. Talk about giving people more than their money’s worth!

5. Your Next Big Thing

When I met Wally Schirra in the green room of a television talk show in the mid-1980s, I think astronauts were a bigger deal than they’ve become in recent years. As one of the original 7 Mercury astronauts, Wally was as big a deal as there could be in that realm.

So I asked this American space hero a pretty obvious question: “After soaring to the heights of space, wasn’t it a big letdown to come back down to earth and eventually become a businessman?” Wally laughed and said he did get that question a lot, usually accompanied by arched eyebrows. He said he had always thought he would like to try some kind of business venture once he retired from space. He said his father, also a pilot, told him when he was very young that one should always know what they wanted to do next after achieving their primary dream. Wally also told me that he was the only one of the original 7 astronauts who had a clear idea of what he wanted to do once he retired from the space program.

So what about you? Do you have an idea of what you might want to do next if and when you reach your current major aspiration?

It’s a simple matter of saying to yourself, “When I get there, I know where my next “there” is. Knowing what you will want to do next after finishing with what  you are doing now is a tremendous source of inner peace and invigorates one’s sense of purpose.

6. Your Powerful Voice

In terms of speaking out to the world and your actual physical voice, whether you want your audience to learn something from what you are saying, or buy something you are selling, a strong, clear, tonally pleasing, well modulated, and consistent voice can make a huge difference in how your message is received by others.

Many studies have shown that in the corporate world and most other professional realms, the man or woman with a pleasing, strong voice has a big advantage.

And here’s the good news. Your voice is not a locked-in physical attribute. It is an instrument, and can be trained to be much more effective and attractive. It just takes a basic course, many of which are available online, and daily, steady practice. The results will come fast and it can be a lifelong practice that will produce many personal and professional benefits.

I put both the writing voice and speaking voice under the same heading because they do have an impact on each other. The best writing comes when the writer is able to speak directly into the keyboard as if he or she was having a conversation with the reader. I always encouraged students in my writing classes to “Speak through your fingers.” Clarity, individual style, and a pleasing rhythm are major factors in successful writing and speaking.

7. Be Open But Very Picky

This principle was actually inspired by a novelty button I once bought that said in big, bold letters, “I’M AVAILABLE,” and below in smaller letters, “BUT VERY PICKY.” At the time, I was a member of The Inside Edge, a leadership support group that met early Tuesday mornings at the Beverly Hills Hotel. My fellow board members included Jack Canfield, Louise Hay, Wayne Dyer, Stuart Wilde and the membership consisted of workshop leaders, authors, movie people, musicians, and a lot of smart, successful, beautiful women. I got the button to wear at meetings, and only a couple of weeks went by before a beautiful woman named Jessica, who was intrigued by the button and the fact I had the nerve to wear it, approached me. We started dating and ended up in a very lovely relationship. The experience got me to thinking that good things come to us in all areas of our lives when we follow that mantra, “I am available, but very picky.”

8. Compliments as a Powerful Prosperity Resource

As we go through life, we receive many compliments. These can become a powerful motivating force in your life, and tell you all you need to know about your perfect path and purpose. One of my personal favorite strategies and one that I get a lot of compliments on from readers, listeners, coaching clients, and workshop participants is my Compliment Bulletin Board. Whenever someone pays me a compliment, either professional or personal, that feels especially good, I ask them to put it in writing and sign it. I keep my board in a prominent place in my office, as well as a copy on my computer desktop.

I actually just received an email with a compliment from one of my Moneylove Club audio subscribers: “I feel my life has already taken a turn for the better.” I will print and pin it, but in the meantime it resides on my desktop. There’s something I like about that phrase, “A turn for the better.” My subscriber is a professor and writer and her simple compliment has already provided an energy boost as I am recuperating from a case of food poisoning which had dramatically slowed me down this past week.

A turn for the better. A direction we can all aspire to, wouldn’t you agree?

9. Say What You Are Going to Do and Then Do It

I got this phrase from my friend, Maria Nemeth, Ph.D., author of The Energy of Money. I find Maria’s work a perfect complement to my own and she has become a mentor and this has become a core phrase in my life. She says, “Making and keeping promises moves you along your path.

My life has definitely taken a turn for the better since I activated a decision to always say what I am going to do and then actually do it. An important piece of this is to only spend time with and do business with people who meet this same high standard. It sounds simple, but in execution, many people fall by the wayside. There is such a temptation to take on more than we can faithfully execute with so many choices and temptations out there,

I don’t like the phrase “I can’t afford it.” when applied to one’s money situation, but the one place I do use it in bolstering my own prosperity consciousness is to say to myself, “I am moving toward always saying what I will do and then doing it, and can’t afford the energy or effort to spend time with anyone who isn’t doing the same.” A life filled with broken promises in either direction is simply a broken life.

10. Leave Room for Surprises, Opportunities, New Adventures

To my way of thinking, there is a hierarchy of success. It is a high level indeed to be doing work you love doing and feel is important and rewarding. However, I reserve an even higher position for those who can always answer with a resounding “Yes!” the question, “Have you left room in your life for something or someone new and wonderful to show up?”

Warm and prosperous regards,

Jerry

You Do Not Have To Be an Unhealthy Entrepreneur

It’s no coincidence that a lot of entrepreneurs have health related problems.

As entrepreneurs, we often treat our bodies terribly in exchange for success.

We work long, unsociable hours, on little sleep, fueling our bodies with crap food – just so we can get back to what we were doing.

This isn’t a healthy lifestyle, nor is this is my idea of entrepreneurial success.

During the last four years, I’ve dedicated a lot of my time to understanding how the body works and what it needs to thrive at an optimum level.

I’ve tested hundreds of supplements, talked to dozens of doctors and spent a small fortune educating myself before writing this post.

I’m not a doctor and you should always do your own research, but this article does outline what works for me – everybody is different.

What Does The Body Want?

Simply put, the body wants every internal process to function in harmony.

In order to accomplish this, we need to provide our bodies with clean, sustainable nutrition and habitual physical activity. This goes a long way towards being successful in both health and business.

Health & Entrepreneurship Can Literally Go Together

The story of Jordan Rubin, CEO of Garden of Life, is a great example of the power of health & entrepreneurship working together.

This man was on his last leg, thin as a rail and suffering from numerous health conditions.

He decided he was going to take his health back into his own hands; ate a completely natural diet, returned to nature and started exercising the “right” way.

He re-gained a lot of weight, and eventually wrote a book about his story; It was called Patient, Heal Thyself.

He then went on to start a supplement company based on the experience and research he went through during his journey back to health.

To sum it up, he’s now a multi-millionaire, and it never would’ve happened if he hadn’t merged entrepreneurship and health.

Granted, Jordan’s story is unique, but it puts into perspective how focus and attention to detail with your health can translate into the same attention to detail and work ethic required to be successful as an entrepreneur.

Change What You Eat & Drink

organic-official

Without a doubt, the most important thing you can do to start feeling better and instantly improve your health is change what you eat and drink!

Enhancing the quality and variety of food that goes into your body ensures that your immune system, metabolism and mental processes function at an optimum level. This is imperative if you’re going to have the mental capacity or physical energy required to run your own business for the long term.

CronoMeter is a free, user-friendly resource that I use to track all of my nutrition. With that said, it’s very rare that I don’t eat like a king – this is what I stick to:

  • 100% organic.
  • Local grown and shipped.
  • Whole unprocessed foods.
  • No added sugar.
  • No soy.
  • Get off the dairy.
  • Balanced macro nutrients (carbs, protein & fat) and micro nutrients (vitamins & minerals).
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Drink kombucha.

Improve The Way You Eat & Drink

It’s not just what you eat, but how you eat that can make a big difference.

There are a few solid eating tips I’ve picked up over the years that have helped keep my health bulletproof – I’ve listed them here:

  • Eat soon after waking up.
  • Set eating times (ex: 9, 12, 5 & 8).
  • Chew your food thoroughly (ex: 36 times, once for each tooth).
  • Don’t drink during and for up to an hour after a meal – it slows digestion. This is an interesting article on drinking & digestion – http://foodbabe.com/2012/02/19/be-unconventional-stop-drinking-with-your-meals
  • Eat food fresh and immediately after it’s prepared to optimize nutritional value.
  • Hydrate yourself – Mental processes are affected by as little as 2% dehydration. Not to mention, the most common cause of afternoon fatigue is dehydration (drink plenty of water, herbal teas, stock, broths & fresh homemade juice).

Improve Your Sleep

guy-sleeping-on-couch-man-boy-resting-2

As an entrepreneur, I go to bed most nights, excited to find out what tomorrow brings.

The thing is, the more I think, the more I toss and turn and the longer it takes me to fall asleep. The way I see it, we have to sleep every day, for the rest of our lives; might as well be good at it.

Here’s what’s been working for me:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day (typically 11pm – 8am).
  • Sleep in complete darkness; make sure to black out your windows. This great article by Dr. Mercola talks about it here – http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/01/02/sleep-in-darkness.aspx
  • Sleep in complete silence.
  • Reduce blue light in the evening (install f.lux app, dim your lights, burn beeswax candles, turn off electronics).
  • Get an adequate amount of sleep each night. Sleeping less than 7 hours per night can double the chance of coming down with an infection (deep sleep increases your body’s production of natural killer cells).
  • Wake up to sunlight. I use a wake up to light alarm clock, at 7:30 it begins brightening up the room until 8am when bird noises begin.
  • Eat two kiwi fruit before bed. Studies show that eating two kiwi fruit every day will improve the quality of one’s sleep by 40% and help you fall asleep 35% quicker.
  • Drink a chamomile, passion-flower or peppermint tea before you sleep.
  • Don’t eat dinner within 3 hours of going to bed.
  • Sleep with socks on. A recent study has shown that cold feet are often a cause of interrupted sleep.

Improve Your Air

The quality of our air has a huge impact on our health. As humans we’re meant to live outside, breathing that lovely fresh air.

Not only is this a great opportunity to absorb some vitamin D3, but also it helps improve our immune system by enhancing our human micro-biome (the “good bugs” living inside us).

Here are some air quality habits that I live by:

  • Keep a window open. This cool article explains the surprising benefits – http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-7936/why-you-need-to-open-a-window…
  • Use natural cleaning products.
  • Burn beeswax candles to purify air. Beeswax is a fantastic medium for candles and produces negative ions when burned, which pulls positively charged particles out of the air (providing many benefits especially for allergy sufferers).
  • Learn how to breathe properly (deep and consciously).
  • Buy some house plants. A NASA study proved they’re great air filters and this video explains the benefits – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmn7tjSNyAA

Sitting Is The New Smoking – Even If You Exercise

Thomas Jefferson would get regular exercise amidst his several hours of daily study at his estate. He was one of the brightest minds to have ever graced history book pages, but he still made sure to get out and exercise each day.

There’s no getting around the fact that the more you sit, the worse health you’re going to have, the earlier you’re going to die, and it doesn’t matter how fit you are.

As Internet entrepreneurs, we spend A LOT of our time sitting in front of the computer. We run websites, write articles, and check stats for hours on end…

But what does all this sitting for extended periods of time do?

Well, for starters, sitting in front of a computer for such long hours increases our risk of depression, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Plus, all that time spent at the computer expending mental energy without any physical activity just makes it harder to sleep at night. Combine that with the fact that most Internet entrepreneurs drink a lot of caffeine – which in itself creates a recipe for throwing everything out of whack.

You have to live an active lifestyle if you’re going to be healthy and successful as an entrepreneur.

The Life We Lead

Our daily habits can make or break our health and our business in the long run.

Creating a daily schedule that incorporates both health conscious activities and entrepreneurial tasks is a great way to remain productive and achieve success.

For example, as entrepreneurs we’re prone to sit for long hours while working, which in many cases translates into unsociable behavior.

Having a positive sense of community is nearly as important to our health as exercise because the division of work, feeling of association and togetherness all help establish a healthy atmosphere and mindset.

One of the most important things we can to do to maximize our health and productivity as entrepreneurs is to create a daily schedule and stick to it.

Now, you don’t want to feel like you’re a slave to your schedule so you must be productive and create time for fun.

Besides your eating times, some of the most important aspects to keep in mind when creating your daily schedule is to make time for breaks and utilize them to get up, move around and interact with other human life.

I’ve adopted a great method from master copywriter Eugene Schwartz that allows me to remain productive yet active and involved throughout my day.

What I do is set my timer to exactly 33 minutes and 33 seconds (33.33) – this seems to be the magic number for me.

From after breakfast until about lunch I work in 33.33-minute chunks with 10-15 minute breaks between “sessions.” I take advantage of these breaks by walking around the park, practicing yoga, meditating, watching funny videos or simply starting conversations with strangers.

By becoming aware of a few of the more common reasons why entrepreneurs and business owners are unhealthy you can avoid them and excel; here they are:

  • Sitting long hours.
  • Bad posture from sitting down all day.
  • Working long hours.
  • No “me time.”
  • Don’t take breaks.
  • Unsociable / lack of community.
  • Eating food on the go.
  • They eat sugar, dairy, gluten, yeast, processed food or soya.
  • Bad sleep.
  • Often burn candle at both ends of the stick (party hard).
  • Travel all over the world, at times exposing us to infectious diseases.
  • Little exercise.
  • Mental exhaustion.

Are You, As An Entrepreneur, Doomed To Be Unhealthier?

You, as an entrepreneur, are actually poised to be a lot healthier than the regular working class folk, who unfortunately don’t really have much of a choice about their lifestyles.

They have to go into work every day, spend X amount of hours there, often under poor working conditions, and have to be cramped up in an office all day without taking any breaks outside.

The good news for you and I is that there was a recent study that showed entrepreneurs were actually healthier. They tended to eat more fruits and vegetables, exercise more, and take more self-responsibility.

The same traits that have made you such a great entrepreneur can be carried over to living a healthy lifestyle. If you put as much work into your body, as you do your business, you’ll be flying high.

Remember, a lot of people who live sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles don’t have a choice about their lives. They’re forced to work inside all day for a set number of hours and can’t even spend their days outside when it’s bright and sunny.

The idea of trying to be healthy, while being an entrepreneur, has to be taken to heart. The most successful entrepreneurs combine great health with great business!

Health by choice, not by chance.

Today I wanted to do an extended list of my rules for creating and building successful websites. I have created 5 websites that have each gone on to have millions of visitors. What I have found is, to give myself the best chance possible to be successful with a website, I need to make sure to follow this checklist.

It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or if you already have 100,000’s of people visiting your site, I find that most sites are forgetting at least a few of these tips, when it comes to creating the best websites possible.

My Top Tips For Creating and Running Successful Websites

1. Your website should load quickly. (Because Google and users loves it!) Watch out for memory intensive plugins or conflicting plugins etc. Here are 16 ways to increase website speed.

2. Security from hackers is important. I lost my first big site because I didn’t have any. More embarrassingly I didn’t have a Back Up! Fortunately these days, most hosts will do automatic backups for you (although I believe you should always keep a fairly up to-date back-up of your site offline also) Additionally never pick a web host that hasn’t got 24/7 live support. When things go BAD, you will want their help. Since we added Sucuri website security to our website over 2 years ago, we haven’t had any problems. I highly recommend that you get it.

3. Always use a .com and unless there really is no alternative don’t use a DASH / Hyphen in between words in a domain name.

4. Build an email list from day one. Go get Popup Domination.

5. Websites do break! Sometimes for what will appear to be no reason, pages will stop displaying as they should or even links will get messed up. This often is caused by a conflict with one of the plugins we use. With regards to internal and external links becoming broken, I recommend you use Broken Link Checker.

6. Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest. Pick one and dominate it, stop sucking at all 3. Or alternatively hire someone to look after your social media and make them responsible for the outcome.

7. Have a plan for your business (website) – I mean a bricks and mortar business without a business plan is pretty silly! Why should it be any different for your website? Have a plan for the coming month, 3 month, 6 months, 12 months! Where do you see you and your website 5 years from now? Do you have an exit plan? Do you have a revenue plan?

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

~ Benjamin Franklin

8. If you focus on one traffic source, you are missing out. Google, Social Media, Email Marketing, Podcasts, Videos, Affiliates, Info Graphics & Linkbait are all important.

9. Consistency is key when publishing content. Daily, Weekly, Monthly, you choose how often to post and stick to it. (Gee, I am not always great at following this Rule myself – but really it is essential!)

“It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.”

~ Anthony Robbins

10. Make it easy for people to contact you. What is more, be open to some criticism or less than positive comments about your website. Sure some comments will come from generally negative people but my overall experience is that people want to help. For example I have received 100’s of emails from people notifying me of bugs and spelling errors.

11. The early bird catch’s the worm, a saying you’re probably heard often before. Take for example someone who bought Business.com in 1997 was able to sell it for $7.5 million 2 years later. OK, perhaps you can’t do that everyday but don’t think this is an isolated case, opportunities are all around us. Take for example Twitter.com – the first few marketers who got on it were able to take advantage of it before new rules came into place to slow you down from adding people. When you see a opportunities, take it!

12. Never retaliate to comments or emails. People will disagree with you and you might even think they are dumb, but they are entitled to their opinion. Frankly we don’t have the time or energy to prove them wrong. It’s also not so important that you need to waste your life trying to prove yourself right and someone else wrong.

This is one of my fathers favorite quotes – not everyone will get it first time, but think about it!

“Do you want to be Right or do you want to be Happy”

13. Ask! You can get a lot of things by just asking. When I was 18, I caught Glandular Fever in Ghana and spent a horrific week in hospital in Ghana before returning to England and spending a week in hospital here in the UK. I had to rest for months after that and decided I had nothing better to do then ask people to do interviews for Retireat21. I spent days emailing hundreds of top internet entrepreneurs for interviews. Three of the top 100 websites in the world came back to me and said they would do an interview, plus over 50 other successful CEO’s and entrepreneurs.

14. Regularly ask yourself – If in 10 years (or in one day, 6 months. I year, 5 years)  you were to look back at your actions today what would you have changed? Do that. From my good friend Craig Ballantyne

15. These days there is an increasing trend that the people who make the most cash online, buy a high percentage of their traffic (pay for advertisements). Basically they have learned additional skills based on lead generation and Cost Per Acquisition (CPA). If you are not also learning these skills, you are missing out. I now include bought traffic in my online promotions.

16. Top list articles still bring me 80% of my traffic, although it only took 20% of my time to create them.

17. In my experience, it’s easier to start a day productively then end it productively. (Well… so far today I’ve done nothing, I guess I will try harder tomorrow..)

18. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket – in particular with how you monetize your website.

So often, people have only one or two methods of monetizing a website such as banner advertising. But advertisers come and go and no month is ever the same. Diversify your income with different methods such as affiliate marketing, email marketing, coaching, ebooks etc! And with affiliate marketing, promote multiple offers.

Also, don’t presume what you are doing right now, will be working in years to come. Keep innovating & educating.

Nothing is for sure in life or business, just because something has worked today, it doesn’t mean it will work again tomorrow. This applies to marketing, selling, traffic, advertisers. There really are No Guarantees – the only Guarantee you can rely on when it all comes down to it, is yourself!

19. Surround yourself with successful people. Retireat21, IncomeDiary & PopUp Domination all came from ‘hanging out’ with other like minded people.

20. Always have a written and signed agreement with your partners / Joint Ventures. People will rip you off for less money then you would imagine. Greed is a crazy thing. Read: 11 Essential Lessons From Going Into Business With People

21. What you Focus on is what you get – so if you want money, FOCUS on it! Always be aware of who owes you money, check that the payments you expect to receive are arriving in your bank account (Paypal account) at the correct time. If you still get paid by a cheque – bank it straight away and don’t leave it hanging around for days.

22. Don’t be afraid of highly competitive niche! The reason they are competitive is because there is money in that niche!

23. When negotiating, often it is more powerful to say nothing. I find that people don’t like silence and will want to say something, often lowering the price.

24. Keep moving forward. Don’t give up – The biggest difference between success and failure is not giving up.

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time”

~ Thomas Edison

“The difference between greatness and mediocrity is often how an individual views a mistake.”

~ Nelson Boswell
